Has anyone ever tried night fishing Lake Somerville in the summer? I just finished rebuilding my 16/52 jon boat and after a year I’m ready to go. I’m rigged for drift fishing , trolling , etc. along with night fishing. Plan on hunting catfish. But like crappie and the other things Somerville has to offer. Just want to catch some fish. Being so hot during the day I want to try night fishing. I’m thinking since I have a map with gps coordinates of most of the structures set out. That I would start out on those and point , drop offs etc.depending what depth is good. Find me a spot and anchor and drop my big green light in the water and see what happens. Have some minnows for all a round. And caught shad with my cast net for catfish or hybrid. Anything that wants to bite. After a trip or to I may try putting out the big rods and slow drifting the main lake. Just wanted to see if anyone has had any luck night fishing? Many years ago I used to go to the marinas and wait for the crappie to come. I appreciate any sharing of a night fishing experience on Somerville with a boat. Also I’m looking for another fishing partner since I only have a couple I end up solo a lot and I’m 57 so my wife worries. I’ll be coming from Smithville so if you’re in this area or Somerville and don’t have a boat or tired of going solo yourself let me know. While drift fishing I can only manage a couple of rods but I’m set up 4-6 with planer boards. It’ll take two people to keep up with that many. I’m retired and try to go on week days when it’s not crowded. Thanks for reading. Hope to here from someone.

I did my first night drift fishing on somerville during the last full moon, Aug 1st I think. It was great - When I launched there was another guy and his wife going out but otherwise I never saw another boat on the water. I too just got new boat and really want to get it out but this 100+ is brutal so i settled for night fishing catfish - Cant wait till this heat breaks and get back onto the bass during the day.
Sadly I go fishing to get away from people (I have a 3 year old and enjoy the peace - Let my mind reset) - I didn't catch anything but I tied into something that broke my 17lb line.
I was drifting the main channel (i dont catfish much) and come to find out i should have been working it more shallow...
I really want to learn somerville more in regards to hybrids.

I’m finally going to get to go. Things kept popping up and I couldn’t finish the boat. I’m getting it done this week for the weekend. What sucks is the motor hasn’t been started in awhile and I can’t run it here because of water restrictions. So I’m completely servicing it with new fuel water separator filter , flushing the fuel system and taking it to Bastrop Friday with some tools so I can test run. I’m taking my son ether Saturday evening or Sunday evening. It’s a holiday weekend but it shouldn’t be to crowded at night. The plane is to get there early and I have a map of all the structures put in the lake for fish. We’ll scout out ones that are close to deep water or on drop offs. Going to try a big green led light I bought that submerges. Set some lines outside of the light for catfish while crappie fishing. If we don’t get busy after awhile and a couple of spots. I may set up a drift fallowing drop offs and across the flats. It’s going to depend on the direction of the wind. For bait I’m catching shad in a cast net and chicken. I may even pick up a few goldfish before going looking for a Flathead. I’ll report back on the trip after we get back so you’ll have some information. During the day in milder temperatures I’ve had good success drifting the flats and loading up the channel cat. I want to catch some big game though. If everything goes smooth with the boat I’ll be going frequently and drifting deeper water in the day. If you ever want to go and don’t want to be solo hit me up. I don’t have that many people that can go all the time like I do. I’m retired and 57. My wife worried about me going solo and really hates the idea of me night fishing by myself. I’ll let y’all know how it goes.

UPDATE: The plans didn’t work out exactly. My son got stuck out of town broke down vehicle. I worked through Friday anyway then finished getting the boat ready. We where moved from a stage 3 water restriction back to stage 2 which means we can use the hose on Tuesday and Friday for certain things. I filled up a tank I have for the motor. Changed the fuel water separator and disconnected the fittings from the hose motor end and I squeezed the bulb the put my thumb over it and released the bulb. This filled the water separator filter and had fresh fuel coming out of the hose in just a few minutes. Then I pulled the plug from all three carburetors and primed until I had flushed out the carburetors with fresh gas. I had also pulled the plugs and sprayed fogging spray in each cylinder let it soak while I did the rest then with the plugs only screwed in a couple of threads and disconnected I pulled the rope a few kinds to make sure the cylinders didn’t have any catch spots. Screwed the plugs in and tightened then hooked up the wires couple of pumps and the bulb was tight. Started first pull. The wife and I took it to Bastrop to check all my work. Floor is nice and solid , no leaks , motor ram great. Even though I’ve yet to see a catfish come out of this lake I tried out my drifting set up. Found the sweet spot for the drift sock and we were in 10mph winds and drifting 1/2mph perfect. The boat stayed so on track I rarely he’d to touch the trolling motor. I stood in the middle of the boat and maned 4 rods no problem. Somerville is next though I’ll do a report afterwards.
