We wanted to do something out of town for the Memorial Day weekend but wanted to stay away from the crowds. We have tried to go to Welsh Reservoir several times in the past, but something had always come up. I made reservations at The Lucky Lure to stay in one of their tiny cabins. (More about them later) Left early Saturday morning and got on the water around 11:00am. The main road into the launch site, the parking lot, and the ramp itself (except for the last 20') are rough. To add insult to injury, they have several small speed bumps on the road going away from the ramp. The last section of the ramp drops off sharply right at the water, causing the underside of the front of my trailer to rub. The water is incredibly clear and there is a ton of hydrilla. We mostly fish the shorelines with crankbaits and the bite was scarce. We knew that the best time to fish this lake is in the Winter, but we came when we could. We didn't catch a lot of bass, but what we did catch were very healthy. We fished Saturday and Sunday, morning and afternoon. We felt like we were going to experience the same results Monday morning, so we decided to go to another lake.
After looking around, we decided to go to another lake we have never been to, Lake Gilmer. A friend of mine lives in Gilmer and has told me several times about how good the fishing is at the lake. We left early Monday morning and got there in about 45 minutes. The parking lot was okay, and the ramps were very good. This lake does not show up on my GPS card. The water was dirty, and the shorelines were inundated with black, dead filamentous algae. I hate this [censored], alive or dead. Fishing the banks was impossible. After an hour looking around, we called it quits. A real disappointment.
>The Lucky Lure was fantastic. The cabin was super clean and had everything a "camper" could need. We will stay with them again someday.
>We will be back to Welsh Reservoir.
>If Lake Gilmer is your home lake, best of luck to you! We will not be returning there.
>Sorry, but Mt. Pleasant has the worse roads of anywhere I have seen in the USA.

Interesting report. Sometimes you win - sometimes the fish win.

Interesting report. Sometimes you win - sometimes the fish win. Plus #1. Yes Sir you have both good and not so good days. At least you were able to fish. Neat post.

Sorry you did not catch more fish. Did you try the inlet from Pines?
