IMHO, half ton diesels are for one purpose - fuel economy. They don't tow as well as gas counterparts in half tons.
But if you're towing 5k or less lbs, it will do just fine and get much better mpg doing it.

I had a 20 yr model. Pulled every bit a good as the prior 17’ 6.2. 15 to 17 pulling boat, (21’ skeeter) Best highway without 39.6 last trip to Washington… new ones have more hp and torque .. 277 hp and 460 lbs torque. If I didn’t need a HD for a 40ft fifth wheel I would have another one.. Go drive one. We have a few at classic

Father in law has a 21 it’s been great.
His tows well. I have an ecodiesel it does suffer a little in towing speed due to not having a lot of horsepower but the new ecodiesel and the duramax are significantly better. I’ve towed everything from a lawnmower to a 5000 lb boat 7000 point TT and a 50 hp tractor on a flatbed with no issues at all.
Not sure why they don’t tow.

I would not be brand specific myself who ever gives the best deal including extended warranty, oil changes and other perks is what I would look for they all seem to have a good diesel product. I’m very pleased with my 22 Ram 3.0 diesel 33 mpg at 75 mph and 27 mpg rural local driving which is the same as my neighbors 3.0 GMC. I understand the concern of Ram discontinuing their 3.0.

I just bought a GMC AT4 with a 3.0. I get 28 mpg on the highway and 16-17 pulling my boat. The V8 Silverado I had before would get 21 on the highway and 12ish pulling the boat. Considering diesel is 25% more expensive, I view the whole thing as a wash. In my opinion, it does pull better than the V8. I believe diesels also hold their value a little better. Anyway, I like mine.

I agree that the mileage is somewhat a wash, but if diesel costs 25% more your reported fuel mileage is 33% better. Marginal but still a savings.
That and diesel isn’t always 25% higher. I bought mine in 2016 and for over half the miles I have diesel was very similar in price to unleaded. For a very brief stint it was less. Either way the increased mileage also gives increased range which is pretty nice.

I have a 23, with the latest LZO engine. Haven't found anything I don't like about it. I swapped out of a 20 6.7 cummins. Pull a 4-4500lb CC every weekend, and 5-6k lb travel trailer occasionally. It does the job I need it to do and does it with much better fuel economy than the 6.7 or the gassers.

It’s my favorite, but the 2020+ ram ecodiesels are pretty solid.

It’s my favorite, but the 2020+ ram ecodiesels are pretty solid. Are they because the ones before (gen1 & 2) are sh*t based on all the lower bearing failures listed on the ecodiesel forums. Plus there is high pressure fuel pump recall they haven't resolved that can grenade sending metal shrapnel through your entire engine resulting in terminal engine failure. Recall is going close to 12 months and they still have make the replacement pump available, recall is for all ecodiesels and one of the reasons they may have discontinued offering it.

Yes I still believe they are. The fuel pumps are not that big of an issue to me they kill the fuel system not the engine. There are tons of vehicles either the same fuel pump, they do fail but it’s not as common. I have a 2015, I absolutely love it. Best truck I have ever owned. 145,000 miles of great and counting. If it were the newer. Edison I’d be happy as could be. I’m still not getting rid of mine going to keep it for the long haul.
