Gonna be fishing a few days with the kiddos in mid March. Our hotel has a pier and might hit goose island state park and the jetty/surf. Anyone have any recommendations for locations species and tactics to try? Not sure what is active during this time of year. Thanks for any tips.

Goose Island SP pier is lighted and good fishing. Also, the Fulton Pier is lighted, $5/rod, unless you're a veteran(it's free). Folks catch lots of big black drum there. The only time fishing's not good here is during a freeze event, which only happens every few years, and not in March. Enjoy. Make sure you show the kids the 1,000+ year-old Big Tree. IslandJim

Is the goose island pier any good in the mornings, or just as night?

Decided to tag on here. Like redchevy, I’m headed to Rockport next week with my son and another father/son to do some kayak fishing. Neither of us know the area or much about saltwater fishing. Any info or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Drop in at Estes flats, look for areas of grass with potholes. Topwater or swim plastics with 1/8 oz screwlock head will catch what you're looking for.

I'm not familiar with any of the piers but in general pier fishing is better at night when there are lights. I would opt for to wade in or try the surf for daytime fishing that is if the surf is fishable. Winds this time of year can make that window pretty small.

Agree with Pat Estes is a good play this time of year but winds can be a factor watch them close. The back lakes on the east side of Estes can be good. You can launch at Palm Harbor RV park you just have to pay I think 5 bucks. Make sure you unload your kayaks then move your vehicle to the grassy parking area so you don't block the unloading area it's pretty small.

Thanks for the heads up on the wind and the launch location.

You didn't mention kayaks. Aransas County has a map, put out by Aransas Pathways. It has hiking and birding trails, AND sixteen kayak launch spots. Many of those are also good wade fishing areas. Contact Rockport/Fulton Chamber of Commerce tourism, and they'll probably mail you a map, or stop in their office on Austin Street and pick one up.
The last half of March is "Spring Break", so it might be crowded, but not like Port Aransas and Corpus/SPI. Have fun and be safe. IslandJim

Thanks for the tips. We hit goose island pier Thursday morning when we got down. We were fighting a 20+ mph wind and temps around 60 and that was the highest they would be. We caught a few hard heads an undersized drum and a monster stingray. Had fun but the kids lost interest which I expected with the slow activity planned on going back for a good evening fish but the weather just didn’t cooperate!
