The water temperature in the lake I fish is about 60 degrees. I haven't use surface lures in a while but will when I go soon. Will fish smash those lures in the dying pads and over shallow weed bed? Probably not in 55 degree water.

I have had amazing topwater action in January and February. Depends on the sun and air temperature. My graph might tell me 50 degrees but the top warms up quick in the back of coves.

Too bad the temperature starts falling fast in NY. When I lived in Texas, fishing was an all-year opportunity. but not so much now. Usually Oct. is the last month fish will strike surface lures depending on whether cold weather invades the n.e. sooner than later.

I think the only time top water doesn't seem to work is when it's iced over. AHAHAHHAHA

I agree with this...another good bait when it's cold. The Pop-R P70, Rio Rico, or the Splash-It

I don't think water temp is the issue, seen them school in less than 50 degree water.

It depends on the species of course. I know I catch way less fish when the water is below the 50's at least for bass. I sometimes catch trout on lures when the water's in the 40's but that's mainly during or after spawning, but that doesn't apply to Texas.

One of our church members , only fished with top waters. He didn't carry anything else in his boat July or January. He did catch fish in the winter on his topwaters.
