I mostly fish with a dough bait, packed onto a weight and bottom fished, with high success.
I have nothing against bread, I'll use it when I see grass carps surfacing and let the bread float in front of them.
But almost every time someone sees me out fishing for carp they recommend I try bread, as if it was a secrete.

Which do you all prefer?

For bottom dwellers. I use a rig that keeps the bait about 6" off the bottom. Using a float.

It's more to do with keeping the hook out of the rocks then anything. But it does present the bait better then it laying on the bottom.

I use dough bait. If I were using a Carolina rig. Then I'd consider bread.

Here's my rig. 50# braid, drop loop, wine cork, weight slider.

Use whichever one stays on the hook better. Typically dough bait will work better than bread. Carp will eat a variety of food. I have caught them on dog food, corn, cornflakes, earthworms, string, and cardboard when nothing else was available. I have a friend that swears the flavor of the bait is critical. He uses about 30 different combinations of flavors in his pack-baits. I use range cubes almost exclusively now, unless I am fly fishing.

I prefer corn, but I grew up using Wheaties and big red.

Me too and later added some cottonseed meal. Still make it like that now decades later.

I was trying to remember the name of that cake like slab the other night. The feed store sold it. Cottonseed meal....

@Grasshopperglock that is one interesting rig. I've seen guys use Santee rigs with floats before. I think that's what it's called, basically a slip rig with a float between the weight and hook. Do you use treble hooks? or is that just for picture purposes? I've found them to be harder for the fish to get in their mouths so I use tiny j-hooks

I use both kinds of hooks. Treble size 4 or 6 for dough. J hook(Kahle 2/0) for cut bait. Currently, I have two rigs set up.

The hooks attach by drop loop. Easy change out. The wine cork was drilled through. Bamboo skewer cut down to peg the float to the line.

I've lost a cork before. Pulled off. Never lost the hook or weight. The cork never floated to the surface either. Belton rock ate it.

Oh my goodness. I lied about the braid. I've had the roll forever. I can't remember where or why I got it.

It's not 50 pound. Lol, it's 80 pound. Both rigs are pictured.
