I rolled on Bob Sandlin yesterday and fished about four hours from noon until about 4:00 pm. The first thing I noticed about the lake is there is a MASSIVE shad hatch right now, I was throwing a Strike King Sexy Shad crankbait about two inches long that was probably getting six foot deep or so and a square bill identical to the crankbait, two different types of frogs, and a jig. I had one bite on the deep crankbait and it came off after I moved it about ten feet and that was it for the day. Another thing I think would have helped is using a lure that didn't have all the wobble of a crankbait but mimicked the GLIDE of a shad or at least looked like an injured shad. I had the size and color down about as close as you could get it but the wobble was no where near the natural action of a live two inch shad.
The shad are so dense right now in the areas I was in throwing a crankbait of any kind was difficult. I kept gaffing shad on my treble hooks; weeds to, but lots of shad. I fished the north side of the lake with a strong south wind and I figure this is what had the shad pushed up so dense, they were in four feet of water or less where I could see them and seem to school even deeper. You'd see them blow up every once in a while from fish chasing them.
I had a blue heron hanging out with me at one spot and it hung just beyond a cast from my boat the whole time I was there. It had figured out when I'd cast toward it, my action would push shad toward it and it was eating like a pig, thought the poor bird was going to bust.
Another observation; and this is for all you folks out there that have Skeeters with duel tanks. Never assume if you run with both tanks feeding the motor that the fuel is just going to uniformly feed from both tanks. Apparently it don't work that way. Getting ready to come home yesterday from down near the Monticello dam back to the state park ramp @ HWY21 and as soon as I took off the motor sputters and dies. It wouldn't crank so I started trolling, probably went about 100 yards and decided to check the fuel levels of both tanks via the gauge switch the port was empty and the starboard had about 3/8's of a tank, that's the gauge I'd been watching. I raised the rear deck lid a switched from both to the starboard tank; reprimed the bulb, hit the ignition switch and she fired right up and ran fine going back, Guess I'll be going from tank to tank from now on instead of both.

Just keep your gauge on the tank that drains the fastest and once it’s low.. switch from both tanks to the one with more fuel. That’s what I do if I run low.
