Anyone make their own compost? If so, I have 14 big contractor bags of Red Oak and Pin Oak leaves you can have. I may be able to deliver them if you are in the general Dallas area. Just leaves, no trash in them.

I thought oak leaves were very acidic and thatโ€™s why grass has a hard time growing under oak trees?

Beats me. I just rake them up and get rid of them somehow. A lot of folks like them in compost piles. I think grass has a hard time under oak trees due to the shade, lack of sunlight and tree roots will hog up most of the water and nutrients in the soil. Derek would know much better than I.

Main issue I've had with composting oak leaves is doing them as whole leaves. They took forever to breakdown. Shredded was much better. As Bob mentioned the main issue with turf is the shade obviously. There is an acidic value to fresh oak leaves but as they balance out to neutral pretty quickly as they breakdown. For most areas in NTX the acidic properties of it would be a benefit for the high Ph soils. But it's so short lived you won't see much of a gain or loss either way. My mom has like 8 huge Oak trees on like a 1/2 acre lot. Trees are probably 45ish years old. I can guarantee I could pull a soil sample and her PH is 7.5ish. 45 years of oak leaf drop hasn't changed her soil Ph one bit.

Butch, you must have a large yard. Do you have a lot of pine needles?
