Hey - what’s the mullet status in the surf at South Padre Island in January? I usually catch tons with casting net in Fall but will be down in January so am wondering if they’re in the surf. I’ll need to throw my somewhere there to catch bait. Thx

The Jetties was packed with them last week. I actually snag hooked a few from the Jetties. Throw a net at the Jetties. HOWEVER, the weather is about to change drastically!

You shouldn't try blind cast netting for mullet, you will just waste your time and snag your net. Walk along the jetties, and cast the net onto visible fish. If there is an obvious snag, don't cast there. Normally they are just over the rocks. If so, toss to them, and don't let your net settle down all the way into the rocks.

Be advised there are length restrictions on mullet in Texas. Don't even have frozen oversize mullet from the bait shop in your boat or you will get ticketed.

Limits Per TPWD = " Daily Bag: No limit Min Length: No limit Max Length: 12 inches. Clarification: May not take from public waters, or possess on board a boat, mullet over 12 inches during October, November, December, and January. No limits apply during other months".

I think that means you can have large mullet in your possession if fishing from a pier or from shore, but you may need to be prepared to argue that point with a Game Warden.

(I underlined for emphasis)

Are mullet this time of year predominantly on the channel or surf side of jetties? I’m fully aware of the size limits. And have had game wardens check my license the past few years in other areas of SPI so great to know they’re doing their job! Thx
