SeaPro Todd and I fished with cliffshot from 10 AM to 3:15 PM. We did one drift from just SW of Sun Point to almost all the way to the dam. Water depth was from 46 to 51 ft deep. We caught 181 counters: 170 white bass, an 18 1/2 inch hybrid, 5 short hybrids, 4 cats, and a yellow bass. We probably caught another one hundred 6 to 9 inch white bass. Fish were suspended at 20 to 30 fow. Todd fished with two rods at a time - one had a slab and the other a sassy shad. Cliff fished with a slab and bo-blade slab. I switched back and forth between a white Mepps #4 with an ounce of weight about 20 inches up the line, and Bob Maindelle's bladed hazy-eyed slab. All of us were catching fish. We used one or two drift socks to keep drift speed at 0.5 mph.

What movement was used with slab presentation ? Bo blade or reg.

I was using a 4" pink fluke on a 1 oz jig and a 1.2 oz skinny slab i made that mimics Bob Maindelle's where it has the tiny blabe on the hook, and a crappie jig on top. Since mostly sandies followed us for 2.5 miles the slab got more hits and hookups catching all sizes, and my pink fluke caught about 15 fat magnums and a legal hybrid. IMO if more hybrids followed us then the fluke would do well catching bigs base on my 10+ years of DS data.

So much sandies followed like the screen shown below but only about 1% to 5% will bite. As you drift some group will bite better and some will approach and smell and ignore the lures as i witnessed this on Cliff's livescope. When the bite is slow, you have to play and see what will work... Like occasional twitching or slow raise or drop. From my personal experience the bites are more frequently and better hookups when temp are colder and bigger fish followed. This varies at different lakes. Striper like the temp even colder. That's the reason why I don't do much deadstick in November and early December due to too many light pecks and misses and cusses. Lol.

My goal for several years now is to take DC deadsticking where good fish follow under and see how DC can catch em with his skillset and tactic. After this trip, it's good to learn that DC tied a 1oz weight above his mepps #4 (glo white), where he drops just below the fish and slowly swim the mepps up through the fish. This technique caught as much fish or even slightly more than the flukes and slabs, for drifting and suspended fishing. DC did the same technique on the haze eyed slab and that works also.

My next goal is to have big group of (10+ pounders) hibbies and stripers follow under and see what DC can do. I am so fortunate to get to fish and pick DC's brain. Lol

I'd estimate that over 50% of the time when I slowly swam the Mepps or bladed slab up through the suspended fish, I would get a bite. Sometimes I could see the lure sinking on sonar, and I would start reeling when it got into the suspended fish. Also, while watching it sink, if you count the seconds it takes to get into the fish, then on another drop when you can't see the lure sinking, you can still know when to start reeling back up. That let's you keep the lure in the strike zone more often than letting it sink all the way to the bottom, then counting up a certain number of reel turns. When we fished with Bob Maindelle, he had multiple live scope monitors, so everyone in the boat could see their lure fall into the fish.

This is identical to what would be my report in deeper water. Being that the water got down to 52 then came back up to 55-57, the big fish went back a little shallower and under birds. I could find groups of hybrids on the slopes of structure in 24-25ft. Catching them by casting a spinner slab and working it back close to the bottom. When the water was 52 I was catching hybrids in the same way youโ€™re report says now. Tons of 8-10โ€ sand bass out there right now though. Still makes for a fun day!
