I lost one of my favorite fly rods during a fight with a catfish. It appears the rod bent over one too many times and broke during the fight. Very sad. The rod was a Browning graphite fly rod that I have used to catch hundreds of fish for decades, including world records. It held out one last time, even broken, to get in the fish. A fighter to the end.

Was it the largest fish you ever caught on it or just one of those things and time to break?

The catfish was one of the smallest fish I caught on it. The rod was one of three fly rods I carry all the time I am fly fishing in freshwater. One of my best days with it was landing 27 carp in a morning after a flooding rain. I have caught many carp and buffalo with it over 15 pounds and a few over 20. I basically just wore it out. It was the second fly rod I learned to fish with. I would have to do some digging, but I probably got it in the late 1970s. Here are a couple of examples:

Sad, Barry. You're probably more likely to be hit by lightning than to find another like it. But, you're the garage sale king! Good luck. IslandJim

IslandJim Well after a short ceremony, I retired the rod and started digging in the garage to pull out the replacement. I found one on EBay a few years back, and I was fishing with it today. It seems to work just fine. However, the handle needs to be broken in. I try to always look ahead.

That early graphite was the best, that’s too bad about the break as the newer high modulus carbon doesn’t seem to have that great feel and feedback of early carbon.
It’s never the biggest fish that break a rod. I broke my 8/9 weight G.Loomis short stix fighting a 2# speckled trout. That same rod had fought 30# black drum and double digit Jack Creavelle.

Sorry to hear about losing your Loomis. Those cost a bit more than the rods I typically use. Now if we want to start talking about jack crevalle, then we are talking about some serious fishing. Jacks are one of my favorite fish. As for when a rod breaks, you just never know. I usually break mine when I get hung on the bottom, but my most dramatic break was when I broke an 11/12 wt Ugly Stik fly rod on a 150 pound spinner shark. I pulled when I should have bowed.
