Boat is in the shop but was curious about people's experience winter catfishing from a slip. I've sunk some pvc condos and I was planning on fishing for crappie this weekend but the kiddo enjoys catching cats more. This is the first year we are in this slip. It's in about 22 feet of water so not sure what to expect or where to start. Should I be fishing off the bottom, or midway down? Probably going to set a couple rods at different depths (away from the PVC i sank). Hopefully can get some shad but if not, some other cutbait or chicken breast. I plan to chat up any other people fishing out there but wanted to see if anyone else had any info. Thanks!

For cats just throw some range cubes into the middle of the slip, wait a bit and start fishing on the bottom or just off the bottom. Half a gallon of range cubes ought to do it.

I did decent 3 weeks ago at my buddies Dock house on Texoma. 33 feet of water fished chicken on the bottom . Caught several really nice channels to 6lbs. He had chummed the area pretty heavily with range cubes and canned corn.

So for sure it's a good option! Although I'm sure that the success rate would vary quite a bit based on location and time of year.

Ya know we always catch blues in the winter on the top hook of a jug line. Also lots of guys on here drift planer boards and even though I don't know what depths they are fishing I am guessing it is not on the bottom. You might use the old cork and set some out a couple of feet from top. Good Luck

I catch cats regularly out of the slip I fish on strawberry chicken. I catch more channel cats on punch bait but a lot bigger on chicken.

Like rickt300 said, range cubes and start fishing.

Thanks for the tips y'all! Can't wait to get out there this weekend. Sounds like channels might be more common under the slips.

i put a double hand full in a bucket and let it dissolve to mush in a few hours, then pour it in a 4" pipe with holes in it that i have attached to my dock...the stink ooozes out the holes and draws the cats to me...don't use as much range cubes that way

The tube idea is a good one. I think I’ll try this. Are most of the holes underwater?

You can fill the tube as much as you want. As the cubes on the bottom dissolve, the ones out of the water will drop into that space and begin to dissolve. This will actually extend the amount of time of the chumming.

it goes to the bottom of the lake, actually i drove it in the mud to keep it sturdy...if your water is too deep, put a cover on the bottom and fill it up with cubes, cutting off the tube at whatever depth you want...i bought the tube at Lowes...no hole drilling

yes, u can do this but it depends on how deep the water is...i'd rather just add a bucket or pour dissolved cubes in it...either way, it works for me
