Hello everyone!

Recently, I picked up my first fly rod- a 8wt maximum catch branded one to get into fly-fishing for carp, gar, bass, and salmon. My dad and I decided on a quick impulse trip, and via fshng84s posts, I came across the Hughes river crossing in the blue river. Now, I know that 8wt isn't exactly ideal for trout fishing, but I'd love to give it a try with what I have. If things don't turn out good on the fly rod, I have an UL spinning i can give a shot too.

With that said, I'm curious about what colors, patterns, rig, and fishing styles I should look into to try and get onto some trout. I found an Oklahoma hatch chart so I have a decent idea of colors and flies, just need to know how to fish them. I am going to be heading down to Cabelas today to pick up some last minute supplies (I have a gift card, otherwise I would have gone to a designated fly shop).

I appreciate and advice
Thanks, Danial

If neither one of those methods work. (Spinning or Fly)

Research, 'Centerpin' reels. It's an extremely old design that's in between a spinning and fly rod. Used commonly with floats in steady rivers and creeks.

The Blue can be a load of fun. Try Woolley buggers, olive, brown, black ones. Either bead head or with a teency weency bit of split shot pinched on the tippet , just enough to get 'er down. Try fishing deeper. There are rocks, oh so many rocks. So be prepared to snag up (bring lots of flies and tippet)

Enjoy!

If you can afford to buy some flies stop by Scotty’s Blue River One Stop. He has several patterns (most tied by local people) that work well on those stockers. Like the previous poster said woolly buggers and jig flies work well. The river has been super low and very clear but this rain should help with that. If you’re not familiar with the river and can’t see the bottom please don’t wade without a wading staff. As mentioned before there are tons of rocks and while one step you’re knee deep your next step may be neck deep and that’s no exaggeration so please be careful.

Ill be stopping buy at scotty's for some fishing licenses for my dad. might check out a couple flies while im there. Fore cast looks to be nice and sunny tomorrow, so hopefully the trout are feeling hungry!

If wading a staff is a must on the Blue - the rocks mandate it. Hughes Crossing can get crowded. If you want more space to yourself go north of Highway 7 to the catch and release area, but you will need to walk about a mile on the west side of the river to get to the best pools. Caught my biggest trout on a homemade frenchie drifted under a strike indicator.

The palomino (stocker rainbow with unusual pigmentation) hit a jig bugger.

Good Luck! Scotty's may not sell licenses. You can order online. Also, if you plan to keep trout, be sure to use separate stringers and tag each with your name and OK Fishing License Customer Number.
