I know it was on the list of coal fired power plants to close, but looks like it has been moved up to close March ‘23 now. Costs to much money to get the plant caught up with environmental compliance under the new regulations, or at-least that’s what the article says. https://www.foxbusiness.com/politic...lant-shut-down-sparking-community-uproar

I hate this as I am only 18 miles away from Pirkey. And just recently, they cleared the woods back away from the parking area and repaved it. Hope it at least stays open for fishing for years to come and doesn't go the way of Lake Monticello.

And as usual, not anything realistic has or will be done to make up for the lost electrical generation. That's always the way intelligent people handle situations like this.

How come when this happens, we just all blame the govt but the corporations somehow get a pass? I see these articles every single time a plant closes, costs too much to upgrade or maintain.
I never see any actual numbers though. The company that owns the plant says it's too expensive to upgrade or upkeep. Does that mean that they're gonna lose money from here on out or does that mean that they just won't make as much money as they'd like? How much money are we talking about here? Who cares about the fishing, I'm just wondering if every customer that benefits from this plant would pay a little more to keep a reliable source of energy in their area?
The govt dang sure has their part of the blame and rightfully so but lets not just assume that corporate America doesn't have their part in this. Anybody have any solid figures for these plants upkeep costs?

On this topic my stepdad put in his papers to retire from a NRG plant here in Houston that runs gas turbines for power generation here. They have not hired anyone to work their operations teams in years instead work the hell out of the ones there ( like him) . He commonly works 7 - 12 hour days and a lot of his days off he is called in. Several of them are retiring this year due to rules changing on their retirement contributions in 23. He thinks they will turn this place into a gas turbine farm ran remotely.

I know we get all of our flyash from the Welch plant, for the past several months we have not been able to get any, we have started using another product that is 30% more expensive, so now our product will cost consumers that much more.

I could but I won't. There are many factors driving the closures of coal fired plants, govt. regulation on mining, cost of PRB coal due to transportation cost, cost of capital upgrades to achieve the new EPA guidelines, etc.
