I had to replace a tire on my dual axel trailer. When I got the wheel back from Discount Tire they have the tire pressure at the manufacturer max pressure of 65 psi. I've been running tire pressure at 50 psi. Should I run all my tires at max psi or drop the new tire down to 50 psi?

Run the tires at the manufacturers recommendation. If you have different tires, run them at what each tire says.

The tire manufacturer's recommendation, raised on the sidewall, is the max pressure for which the tire is rated. Not the same as the recommended tire pressure.

On a vehicle, the vehicle's recommended tire pressure is usually on a sticker on the door jamb. On a trailer, I'm not sure. Look it up. But definitely not the max pressure on the sidewall.

Run your trailer tires 5 pounds under the max psi for your particular tire. Reason being is as the tire heats up when rolling down the road, it actually increases the air pressure in the tire, usually 2-3 pounds. I run Carlisle radial trailer tires on my boat trailer, never an issue. I would advise not running your air pressures 15 pounds under the max PSI of the tire, your asking for problems and prematurely wearing out your tires

+1. My skeeter trailer states a specific load range E tire. A 225/75-15 ST load range “E” tire has a max cold inflation of 80psi. My trailer sticker says “80psi cold” as well. It’s not a coincidence.

I run load range E 33" on my f150, rated to 80 psi and I run them at 40 psi, the ride is much better and the tires will make it to their 55,000 mi. claim.

my trailer tires are rated to 65 psi and I run them at 35 or 40 max. the boat does not get beat to hell on rough roads due to no flex in the sidewalls.

the max. pressure is for a max. load when you need the support, light loads and high pressure and you will get uneven wear a lot of the time due to the contact patch being center of tread.

run em how ya want, I have never had a problem with wear or longevity running les psi.

What bolt pattern do you have on your boat trailer. I’ll try to carry one of my old spares for when I see ya on the side of the road with a blow out.

been running trailer tires like that for decades, only blowout I have ever had was when I bought the 184 and it had car tires on the trailer.

when you fully inflate one to max. pressure and run a light load like a boat it will ride a lot rougher since the sidewall can't flex near as much, 40-45 psi is all I have ever run. the champion has a tandem so 2 tires rated at 1500# gives me 3000# per side and with shocks on the trailer it rides nice at 40 current trailer tires are rated at 65 psi.

Keep in mind there is also a direct correlation between trailer tire pressure and speed. If you are not running the listed max pressure you may also be reducing the max speed rating of the tire.

I run mine within 5 PSI of max and trailer rides good but my boat is heavy. With a lighter boat I might go a little less depending on the ride.

If you guys think back when Ford and Firestone and their tires on the Explorer had all the lawsuits with all the blowouts... Remember all that mess? The guys at the dealers was telling the owners to run less than that rated tire pressure to help soften the ride of the Explorer. Tire failure like a blowout is in the sidewall from heat and flex working together to create the perfect storm. There is lots of surface tension in the sidewall flex.

Sure the Explorer rode rough and uncomfortable but you don't run the tire pressure lower to soften the ride. That flex in the sidewall can really get you in trouble. If I do anything different from the max tire pressure, I have ran tires past the max. To make my tires stand tall with as little flex as possible, as I added to much weight to my trucks and/or trailers. Don't get all tripped up with that word MAX and under inflated your tires.

Sure, I know many of you guys run the tires softer and things do ride better, but that really is the wrong place to help the ride comfort. That tire under inflated makes so much more surface tension from the more flex in the sidewall. Just remember all that trouble Ford and Firestone went through, that was all from under inflated tires. Ford rolled Firestone.


You had to have drove one of those top heavy micro boxes of a vehicle. Everyone that ended up in the junk yard. Was a rollover. No matter what tires. Because people changed them out.


You could yank the steering wheel and feel the thing wanna tip over.
