I have a penn battle 3 4000 with 12lb mono line on a 7 foot battle 2 rod. I feel like a 10 foot pole would be fine for surf fishing. I need to know what rod and is the penn battle ok for surf fishing. What I'm trying to aim for surf fish from small to medium fish like whiting, pompano, redfish and drum. I would prefer to fish using cut bait on the bottom rather than using spoons and artificial baits. I have used fish bites and I did catch some fish with that off the pier. I have a pompano rig from the store and I have heard that pyramid weights work well, just want to know the right rigs to use as well. I just need help with surf fishing setup.

I would love to give you advice. I use a 10+ foot rod with a spinning reel. Is the 12 lbs line fresh? This will be fine for whiting, ladyfish, trout ect. I have always used 15lbs just casting in the surf with bait but for my big rods I use 30 lbs or heavier as I use heavy weights.

I reckon this time of year you could get away with a 7' rod if you stand in the surf and cast. A long rod kelps keep the line out of the sand somewhat. Good luck to ya.

I will defer to more knowledgeable fellas.

The line is fresh, I keep trying to look up videos for help on if a 4000 reel on a 10 foot rod will work, but I probably will have to buy a 9 foot rod for the 4000 for pier fishing and buy another set of rod and reel for surf fishing plus rigs, Jesus spending more money.

Look on FB marketplace. I found a daiwa reel and 10' surf rod for $40! I figure the reel alone was $150 new. a little TLC and I have a nice rig. Also use your 7' setup with smaller bait and lighter weights.

I spent quite a bit of time adding a "How To" section on my website with surf fishing basics. A lot of my customers ask me questions about surf fishing so I decided to answer as many as I could. Lots of good information here:

The Basics - Surf Fishing

Hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any questions.
