I have been catching a lot of carp on a fly rod in water from 1 to 10 feet deep. Here is a 30” common carp I picked up this evening.

I always enjoy catching variations of fish species. This evening I caught a dark common carp along with several others on a fly.

I fish mainly in lakes, but do some river fishing. The key is to find an area with lots of fish.

B&S,

River or a lake doesn't matter so much as a place you can fish easy enough and you can bait you out a spot to draw the fish in. Certainly some lake and river places better than others as with all fishing. I like to find a place to fish for these fish in area's with little to no stumps and sticks for these big powerhouses to wrap you up on, certainly if you intend to take them on the fly...

To help things you can bait these fish easy enough with range cubes you can get at a cattle feed store. They make lots of different ones now days. I like to fling these out in the area you want to fish several hours before to help draw more of the fish in.

If you know of an area that has had these fish, baiting it out will get the fish into the area feeding better and will help with getting the action on more timely. Either way you want to fish for these, big smiles go right along with some long runs of the fish swimming off with all your spooled line lol... Sometimes even with your drag down hard. Fishing in general is good for our soul. These guys baited out into a feeding frenzy are really something as they can get really hot to bite.

The carp have moved deeper. Although I am still seeing a few fish near the surface, the majority are being caught from 10 to 30 feet deep.

Nice! That's good info as well. cheers
I'd imagine catching them on the fly just gets harder as it gets colder

January and February are by far the hardest months to catch carp on a fly. Surface fishing is almost totally gone and deep fly fishing is very slow.
