Hard to find much info on them in texas or in general really. I know there are walleye and saugeye stocked out west, but I’m curious to know if anyone is aware of populations of sauger that exist in texas. I’ve caught them before north of here, and I found some limited information on them suggesting they exist in the red River drainage and being rare, but present below lake texoma. Anyone ever catch one or know of someone who has?

I don’t believe sauger have been stocked in Texas since the 1980s. There is not a record for sauger in the state and I am not aware of anyone catching one in the last 30 years. I recently caught a red devil cichlid in Texas, so something can always show up, but I think you will have a hard time targeting them in Texas.

Never heard of a sauger being caught in Texas.
Kirby Lake in Abilene has saugeye (cross between a female walleye and a male sauger) record.
Gordon Lake in Iowa Park and Lake Fort Phantom Hill also have saugeye.

I did find a document of sauger being caught in three different Texas locations:

I’m not worried about targeting them in texas, it’s just peaked my curiosity due to the fact that most of the literature I read mentions they’re in the red River drainage, yet I’ve never heard of someone catching one in texoma. You can head north in to Oklahoma and find them for sure, as well as walleye and saugeye.

murray I am pretty sure has some saugeye in it along with the walleye so texoma should have some. north half of the state has a decent population of saugeye, most lakes have some decent sized and they eat good.

I do not believe there are any sauger in the Red River below Texoma. Most of the sauger references for the Red River I have seen are from the Red River in the northern part of the United States, like North Dakota. There are many references in online fishing sites that are just wrong. There are references to Texas sturgeon and even unicorn fish in a freshwater Texas lake on one site I read.

I figured as much, but the site I read that on was Oklahoma department of conservation. They do appear to be in the Arkansas river drainage, and from what I’ve read they’re pretty common in the Ohio and Tennessee River drainages. Out west it looks like they show up in the platte and Missouri River drainages, so they are pretty common in the Midwest and even parts of the south, I suppose just not in Texas. Like I said I’ve caught them along with walleye and saugeye in Oklahoma, one thing I can guarantee you is they all taste great.
