I am red fishing at Laguna Madre for the next few days. Been struggling. I can see them, usually solo or two or three, but no big schools, I can’t get them to take my bait, using various colors soft plastic shrimp tails on 1/8 oz jig head, hogies, a&m baits, gold spoon etc.. They will swim up to the baits or flee it. Any suggestions?

The main choices are just keep trying or get a cast net and try a mullet. They won’t swim away from a mullet.

Thanks, hate to resort to cut bait, but I’ll try it! Thanks

Sight fishing is the next level up. If you can see them, pretty good chance they can see you back. Lure choice completely depends on the amount of gunk in the water. If it's pretty clean, they'll chase a sand eel 20 feet to hit it. If you're on the sand, use that. Sand pockets in grass get a hogie super minnow. Really gunky gets the weedless spoon called up. Change up your jig head weight, if you're using 1/8, change to 1/16, if you were using a 3/4 oz spoon, try a 1/2 oz, I add red bucktails to all my spoons, it keeps them up in the top of the water better, and makes a little softer entry. Try speeding up your retrieve, too slow gives them time to think about it, something zipping by can draw a hard reaction bite. Make sure you're casting out ahead of them far enough, never coming up from behind them. Once you start to get a feel for getting them to work, it's hard to want to fish any other way.

Gulp can help if they are sniffing it. Also back off and blind cast them.

Thanks for the info! Very helpful! I actually caught 2 good reds today on a super minnow pumpkin/chart.

you might try throwing frozen sardines. put the hook through the head and cut off the tail. They love those things
