It started out being a rough month. First, the starter on my 40hp Tohatsu motor went out. I thought to myself, things like this happen, but that’s ok because it’s still under warranty. The day before a scheduled vacation, I went to pick it up and the technician said he couldn’t honor the warranty because the registration was never received by the manufacturer. I called the dealer where I purchased the motor and he said he’d look into the situation. Still waiting!
Now to the fishing. I got on the lake a little before 8am and the water temperature was 79 and by 2pm it was 82 degrees. Lake levels looked to be 3’ low. Water was lightly stained and mostly calm with occasional gust due to the front that moved in.
I started searching the shoreline for the little guys. After several hours, only found a couple of small beds, which were not very productive. Caught a 5lb channel cat and 6 sunnies on the gulf alive chartreuse minnow.
Rigged up my 10’ crappie pole with a Bobby Garland jig and went searching. Found several small brush piles near a point in 15’ of water. Right off the bat I caught a slot length bass and then another before catching a large black crappie. Catching those big guys on light tackle with a medium action rod was fun.
Ended the day with 6 sunnies, 8 bass, a catfish and one crappie. Every fish was released except for the crappie. When I measured the crappie in my boat it measured 14 and 1/8 inches. It wasn’t till I got home and checked the TPWD website that the record on that lake was 14”.

Zane...nice report. The catfish & bass look a little on the thin side, but the sunny & crappie look very healthy. Just curious...are the records kept by length, weight, or both & do you plan on submitting for a record ?

Steve, the posted record on TPWD has both the weight and length. The thought of submitting an application did cross my mind but I believe you need a certified scale to weigh, which I don't have. I'm making a copy of the application and will know where to find a scale if I'm lucky enough to catch another.
My livescope was showing a lot of bass around those piles. The crappie were cowering in the brush ever time they came by.

Excellent Report Jonboatfishing. thumb My favorite lake.

As far as the records. There are either weight or length records. The 14 inch fish you saw in the records was a weight record. If you want to set a length record then the fish must be released. They actually call it Catch and Release records. Also, in addition to releasing the fish, it must meet the minimum Big Fish length requirement. Crappie must be a minimum of 15 inches.

I had no problem launching boat. The water is shallow around the docks, but I had no problems.
