Since you mentioned So. Colorado, you might put the Piedra (near Pagosa Springs) on your list, especially if you also plan to fish the Conejos. It's an easy walk in. You have to time it to miss the run-off and hit the stonefly hatch shortly after, usually about mid-July. Throwing big stimulators is the ticket if the stones are flying around. Buddy and I had an epic day there a few years back, and never saw another fisherman.

Kaboboom, thanks! I will keep that in mind and will go back and re read the chapter on the Piedra. What section of the Piedra did you fish if you don't mind. I plan on being up there mid to the end of July, I read that it goes off color easily after storms in the summer so I will keep that in mind also.

I'm not sure what section. We stayed at a place called Sportsman's Paradise, about due North of Pagosa. There's a bridge that crosses the Piedra on the way where you hike in and we fished where it joins William's creek. We only had to walk a little over a mile to hit the river. Not a backcountry thing...more of a day trip. William's Creek Reservoir is just North.

you are mixing up rivers, piedra comes down to hunters campground north of 160 and runs thru 2 small canyons to the hiway then navajo reservoir. williams creek reservoir is up by kremmling, se of steamboat, north of silverthorne.
