I stopped at 7-11 to get gas and something to drink. Put my card in machine at the pump, it read “See Cashier”. I proceed inside and get the drink and head to cashier.

Cashier - Is this all you need?
Me - Well I was going to fill up and pay at pump, but machine said see cashier.
Cashier - Yeah, it’s not working…how much do you want…you can just pay here. (People queuing behind me)
Me - No idea, I really need to fill up.
Cashier - Well I can set how ever much you need here. (More people queuing)
Me - Yeah, I don’t know how much it’s going to take. Can I leave my card with you, fill it, come back in and pay.
Cashier - No, we don’t have a way of doing that.
Me - Okay
Cashier - You still want the water? (Now at least 10 people waiting behind me)
Me - Yes please
- Me (while he’s ringing up water) - Must be tuff having all your pay-at-pump machines go down on a busy Saturday night
Cashier (while handing me water) - They’re not all down…it’s just that one that won’t take a card right now.
Me - Awesome man, thanks.

Try finding a real cashier at Walmart or any grocery store. Aggravation abounds everywhere.

Been going on for years. Several years ago I bought something in a local minit mart with a $10 bill. My change should have been $8+, except the cashier said I can’t cash that. I laughed as I thought she was joking. She wasn’t. Then I got really confused with her reasoning until I looked at display on register, it was showing change should have been $800+.

Yes her booger hooks had extra long snatchers but she couldn’t comprehend typo.

And folks wonder why many of us think we are doomed.*

I probably went through 10 times of that with cashiers before one of them finally told me to just tell them an amount for more than I will need and the charge will be adjusted to only charge me what I actually pumped.
Now days though, if it says see cashier and there is not another pump easy to get into, I will just go somewhere else.
Life’s too short for going inside when I don’t want to.

My card will only charge how much gas I put in even if I told the cashier a higher number. I can get another receipt from the cashier indicating this if I choose to.

This first happened to me 40 years ago. Nothing new but I have not had to deal with it very often.

I do as some here have said. If I get a see cashier sign I move to another pump, then to another station if I can't find one that will take my credit card.

LOL The customer is always right. Let's be fair here, did any of the other pumps have signs on them? Obviously the answer is no since they are all working properly. You stopped at that pump and for some reason decided not to move to a fully functioning pump. Was it the cashiers place to question you on why you chose that pump over all the other working pumps or just state the facts of how the pump you chose works? Did he handle your water purchase to your approval? Sounds like this cashier went above and beyond to try and make your stop at 7-11 everything you had hope for and more. I believe he deserves at lease a 9 out of 10 icees for his interactions. Maybe!
