I've never fished for snakeheads or bowfins. How do I fish for them? As for the gear required and lures or baits, I would like to know.

Also, where can I find them?

We catch bowfin sometimes at caddo lake and I have gotten them on Fork. They seem to love floating frogs. My pal caught a few with cutbait shallow too. That is as far as my experience reaches. I do not think we have snake heads here in Tx.

There are currently no snakeheads that have been documented in Texas.

Why would anybody want to catch snake heads? They are an invasive species....

Great question,
Snakeheads are tough fighters and eat fairly well. They are invasive and core of the snakehead issue is in south Florida, just like the Peacock Bass and a host of others. Stripers, Redfish, Common Carp, Florida strain Large mouth Bass, Trout, Tilapia, Walleye, are exotic or invasive to most Texas lakes or waterways. So, to not fish for them only reduces the use of the fish population or removes the management of the population.

I don't know how true it is as you can hear and read anything, but I was working down at the south end of Lake Okeechobee some years back. There was a guy that was saying that from best he could tell those snakeheads not only get really big but will eat, or at least take on anything to try and eat. Game fish birds alligators snakes and he said in the absence of something, they thought from things these professional fisherman had seen they would eat their on kind if they could.

I fished down there alot and worked more than a few FLW bass tournaments there over the years. I never caught one, or even seen one someone else caught. They sound to me though, there kind of like all the snakes and other exotic species they have there. Which most of those are a problem for the most part.

You get Offshore down there, they have the lionfish, it's well known down there those you catch to kill, as they have no known predators and are destroying the reefs and about anything else. They are taking over literally. Those fish have 12 spines they can get you with, while the snakehead only has 3 lol, I figure, it's just if you are small enough or to weak they just eat you, it or whatever lol
Make no mistake though, south Florida does have some real problems, even big sugar draining the swamp there for harvesting sugarcane, now has the man made canals draining the water run-off from their fields, into the gulf and the Atlantic has been killing everything, causing this thick green algae on top of the water, that nothing survives, so in other words man is one of the problems also.

Good to hear that the population did not spread for snakeheads. We caught out side of Coral springs. Loved spinner baits. The boys used the exotic green anoles for bait.

I have caught bowfin several times fishing on Fork on just about every lure. If you drop it in their face, they will grab it.

Bowfin are found mostly in east texas. Ray hubbard has them in the metroplex, but that’s the only lake I’m aware of that has them. Everything east of there is where I would go.

I have caught one bowfin in 40 years of fishing. I will say they put up one hell of a fight.

Love the Bowfin, Ive caught them on Frogs, Spinnerbaits and Threadfins (LOP, Fork, Ray Hubbard and Neches River). None were on purpose, if I knew how to target them better, I would fish them more often. My biggest went 12lb out of a kayak, that sequence was awesome.

Rowdy: When the Lionfish began to (over)populate the Caribbean, a friend in St. Croix was in charge of leading the local divers on Lionfish hunts. They captured and killed a lot, but they breed like rabbits. I told him if they wanted to wipe them out, they should tell the local fishermen that they were an aphrodisiac! They would have killed and eaten them all, in no time. IslandJim
