Took a friend of mine out fishing that had never caught a wiper or striper. Got on the lake around 9:30 after stopping at Jan's in Quitman for breakfast. I had brought my cast net for live bait because I wanted to put him on some big fish. Easily caught bait within about 15 minutes and put them in the livewell. I had never tried to keep shad in my tank and was fearful they wouldn't last long. My fears turned out to be correct. I need a bait tank or some way to convert my built in ones with a filter. We headed to the spot that I had had success with not too long ago. We had some success there with hybrids and a striper but it wasn't what it was. We moved on to another locally known spot that we saw the guides at earlier in the day that was now deserted. Marked a lot of fish and this is where the big fish of the day was caught. 11lb striper. My biggest on the lake to date. Plenty of stripers and wipers were pull off this hole but it eventually slowed down for us to look elsewhere around lunch time. I decided to check the spot again we started at and decided to move up lake until noodles were on the screen. Mid lake is where we found them on points and flats with submerged timber. We caught here until 6 o'clock hard and heavy. I don't keep a fish count so I couldn't really say how many big fish we both ended up catching but my arms were cramping up by the end of the day. This spot produced Tawakoni sized white bass, 4-9lb wipers and striper up to 7 pounds. I also was repeatedly smashed by several fish that either broke off my 15 lb fluoro at hookup or broke it as I was attempting to net. I think I'll go back to 20lb. Quite a few fish swimming around with my lures in their mouths right now. We finished up the day at Cloud Point where we saw the birds and sandbass competing for shad on the flats. Every cast was another sandie. Finished up the day around 7. I don't really take a lot of pictures while fishing but we did take a few. All fish were caught on artificial 1-1.5oz spoons.

Great day for sure. Glad the fish are getting back to biting. I hate trolling.

Once the water temps get to the 80s you will struggle to keep shad alive in a livewell. I use 1/2 gallon frozen water jugs to cool the water in my baitwell and also reduce the quantity of shad. Gizzards seem to handle the higher water temps better then threadfins.

Water temp was 83. I have noticed that before. Threadfin are made of glass. Thatโ€™s what I netted as well. Iโ€™ll try the water bottle next time out.
