So I'm looking to buy a boat off a distant relative in Minnesota while I'm near Austin, Tx. It's a 1991. While I was trying to look this up, I'm wondering if there will be some kind of issue about it not having a certain title. 1994 requires all motorboats and outboards must be titled. I think everything is original and original owner as well. My boss was telling me that I need to find a forum for TPWD for the boat and outboard and then a DMV forum for the trailer... I think that's all he said. Does this sound right? Is there any other paperwork I will need? What do I do with this paperwork? How long until I can drive it?

I've only ever bought stuff from dealers because all this paperwork stuff seems complicated... This would be my first boat and I don't even have a boating license... I will need to get my fishing license renewed as well. (Hated bank fishing, all I could do)

Thanks,
Swyt

PDW 143 and PDW 144 for boat and outboard. Also no such thing as a boating license

100% do NOT buy a boat that does not have a paper title or the original bill of sale. TPWD makes it next to impossible to get a title, due to the risk of stolen boats.

TMD, I believe he is referring to the law about being born after a certain date and having to take the boat certification class. Something like born after the 90’s.

This thing, something us old farts don’t have to worry about.

best to go by tp&w an find out what you need from the state you are getting it from an the county office to see what you will need on the trailer will save you a lot of headaches because when you get home the money is gone an folks are less likely to help with your registration problems.

Make sure to ask ?s at the county tax office. The one in Rockwall gave me a list and did not check weighing the trailer. The LA trailer title I had did not have the weight on it and I happened to get a rookie at the tax office. I have heard that some tax offices want an empty trailer weight and make people weigh them without the boat. I was fortunate in Rockwall because I knew the boat and motor weights and was able to deduct them from the weigh ticket. At the very least you will need to have the trailer inspected. Texas requires all out of state vehicles and trailers to be inspected.

I'm being told he only has 1 title but it has the boat, motor, trailer on it. Does that sound right? Earlier I was told the trailer was rated for 600 tongue and 6000 boat. I said that doesn't sound right as its only a single axle and a 1, 7/8" ball. But reading a bit for Texas, you then need a title for that weight. Maybe that's good? He also said he's going to go to the DMV. Maybe that's how Minnesota does it? I'm trying to find emails for TPWD and the right County Tax Office. Otherwise I would have to take off work which is a problem right now. (hot job) What if because it's all 1 title that I take it to TPWD (What does the D stand for?) They take all my paperwork for processing and then I don't have the title anymore to go to the Tax Office for the trailer? Do I need to take everything (B,M,T) to these places when I do?

go pick up the boat with what paperwork he has from the state, have him make out a bill of sale for ea. item, boat/motor/trailer can be on the same bos, and stop at quitman tax office on the way back, they can do all of it right there.

stop in yantis at the pennzoil oil change and have them inspect it, then quitman.

I live in fannin county and use them for how easy it is there, 30 mins. for engine title yesterday due to having to redo some paperwork, she thought I was buying a whole boat. lol

you do not have to title it in Tx. since a single axle won't be more than 3,500# rated on a boat trailer, you can title or just register it your choice (title it imo)

single axle is around 5-600#, I used 550 when I had my champion 184.

from quitman you can catch 20 west to 35 pretty easy.
