I have my trolling motor (30# Minn Kota) set up on the kayak and am just using the head for the controller and it’s mounted right next to the seat. Well I’m just going to bite the bullet and get a pwm for it.

So here’s my question between this one that is pictured and the Tahoe Yakfishers model for just a little bit more, which one would you go for?

If you were to buy something else that is plug and play what would it be? I’ll be the 1st to say it’s out of my realm on building one.

Thank you

PWM stands for Pulse Width Modulation, not sure what it does on a trolling motor. ON PC fans it controls the speed vs the voltage but I would figure the motor would have to know what to do with it.

On external pwms, go with the most heavy duty one you can get or one that has overload protection or a fuse. If weeds get tangled in your prop to the point that it doesn't spin, the motor will be at stall current which can exceed the rated current at full speed by at least two times or more. That can easily fry a p w m in a second or less, at least that's what happened to me.

Here's another way to do it, probably cheaper than the cost of a PMW box, especially if you already have a cordless drill.

I use that kind of system with my backpack Float Tube, check out the float tube section on this forum for additional videos and info.

Thats a fancy (and costly) PWM right there!
I use one off Amazon for $20ish mounted in a waterproof , vented box. Lots of DIY vids showing this on Utube
BTW-you just need the main wires coming off your TM going to whatever PWN you are using. The other 3 smaller wires go to power coils that your old head mechancal switch used
