Finally got a great surf window Friday morning Aug 26th. Short window but a very good one.
N to W light wind, almost flat surf, cloudy to east & south, tide moving water very nice & just a bit too clear. An awesome view of the office this Friday morning.
Got wet at 6:20 am, throwing topwater in wade gut. Multiple blow ups each cast. First fish was a measured 21"+ trout, then multiple Skippies brought in after that in between several trout missing or spitting 2 set of trebles. Retied 2 times when skippies frayed the leader too much.
Moved out to the 1st gut, same topwater, picked up a buck trout, maybe old size minimum, then a dandy 18-20" trout, both were serious about not wanting to "Come to Pappa" as well as a lot of skippies throwing the lure after getting hooked. Lots of blow ups & swirls almost every cast.
About 7:15am, a school of bruisers must have come thru, consecutive casts as storm offshore started sending bit bigger swells to the beach, slurp hits; very hard pulling, drag peeling, head shaking fight then off the hook. More than once. Felt like trout, 99% sure they were, but no evidence. Those were some real fish.
By then, 7:30 or so, topwater bite died, got silver spoon out, hooked multiple Skippies and couple solid pulls with fish on for few seconds then off. Felt like trout but again ?
Beached myself about 8:20 after 20 minutes of no bites having to get going with rest of the day.
Short but fantastic topwater action in the surf, been Wolf brand Chili on beach front topwater action. Know I said I'd keep surf trout but released 'em as didn't have time to do the work.
The previous evening, Thursday the 25th, got done with business later than wanted so had about 90-100 minute window to try to nail the big trout we know are hanging out in a particular area.
GLW was to fish as well, so picked up a pint. Got to the location expecting folks to be lined up, nada, empty stretch. Got GLW in business she begins to get frustrated by the Skippies & other fish that were not getting hooked up & brought in.
Spent a lot of time deckhanding for her until she got a few skippies in so I got slimed there.
After a while I got in the game and after a bit picked up a solid hit & set the hook. Fish started running, pulling drag multiple times; back & forth, it takes line, get it back, takes line, get it back. Finally get it close, spot on the tail! Nice Red, get it in and find out GLW was taking some pictures while fish was up. Easy 26-27", 7-8 lbs. Released her & got back to fishing. Remember GLW only said: "nice red"
Magic time is coming, bust out the trout rig, start casting, 10 minutes or so of casting, the "HIT" happens,........set the hook, fish is head shaking, going back & forth, comes up to surface yellow mouth wide open & thrashes like a wash machine. GLW says "that's a HUGE trout". I'm thinking keep head down & right about then she throws it/ comes unbuttoned. I wasn't really sure she was gone, maybe running towards me, reel fast, nothing but lure resistance, wait there she is........ but not pulling like before, then up comes a Skippie with the lure, flips around & gets tail hooked as well on rear treble. So I'm reeling in a U shaped Skippy while mumbling about that trout.
Got Skip unbuttoned & threw back, fish a bit longer until dark & headed in, frustrated but pleased.
Short amount of time fishing but had great time & action both in evening & morning.
