Ok so where is all the water going??? What is being done with the water out of Amistad. Here is what I cannot figure out. Cochiti runs down the rio grande to Elephante butte, then to caballo, and then the rio grande eventually makes it Amistad. Also, the Pecos runs off the mountain to Santa Rosa lake, then to Ft Sumner lake and on down the pecos and joins the Rio Grande at Amistad. I know for a fact, we drained Santa Rosa almost dry, Fort sumner is 18 feet lower compared to where it was in January (thats the Pecos river side). Elephant Butte is the lowest I have ever personally seen it and not sure it could go much lower. So the amount of water sent this way to Amistad is an incredible amount. What is Texas doing with all the water? No way Amistad should be this low in my mind because the amount of water sent out from Santa Rosa alone should have that ramp up at least 5-10 feet.

My guess??? I think it’s being sent down the river to help deter illegal immigrants from coming across the river. But I have no knowledge if that’s true or not, just my pee brain speculation.

But there is no water coming into Amistad, the Rio grande is dry in west Texas. The Pecos is dry as well, it just hasn’t been raining anywheres.

I don't believe any NM water from the Rio Grande is getting to Texas, what little there is gets used up in irrigation in the Rio Grande valley.
Last time I went to the Butte there was a lot more water in the canals than there was in the river.
Sadly -- don't see it getting any better.

I think the entire southwestern USA is so dry that what little water is flowing is immediately being absorbed in to the ground. I can tell you Val Verde county is bone dry, all my buddies tanks are dry, creeks are barren.

As much water that has been drained out of our lakes... just hard for me to fathom this. Something screwy going on if you ask me.

NOT we have had 2.5 inches this year in Del Rio. This is not necessarily on the river. There's been nothing in everthing is out. It's sad but it is what it is. You or I can not change history so we need to let it rain if it will. It will come back but the question is when??

Go look at the Rio Grande ABOVE Lake Amistad entering the lake and look at the water being released from the dam and you will get your answers. And it’s not just contractual releases for TEXAS farmers only. Falcon has the same complex international contractual agreements to release water regardless of how much is coming into the lake. All about water rights. As far as the releases from Santa Rosa into the Pecos. Santa Rose is like 3500 acres full and Amistad is like 65,000 acres full. PRAY FOR RAIN!

The has been basically ZERO water coming down the Rio Grande into Amistad.. There were a few showers earlier last month that put little impulses in the river. But it has been minimal.. Sure there is a little natural flow.. But it is negligible.

There is basically no water from New Mexico making it to Texas..

It is hard to comprehend how vast the watershed area is, and even harder to grasp the fact that there have been no rainfall events that have been beneficial to the lakes in NM or TX.. In years.. And I can't ever remember a rainfall event in NM that put a lot of water in Amistad.

The Conchos in Mexico can be a giant contributor to Amistad and Falcon.. But there has been no significant rain in that watershed as well.. Last time the two lakes filled up (2010) that is where the water came from..

La Boquilla on the Conchos, which is similar to size as Falcon as per volume of water, is at 20%..

Too much to fill up before it gets here..

You will not see big rises in either lake till you see the national news showing pictures of people standing on roofs..

Our club has learned that NPS here at Amistad has verified there is still plenty of ramp left at Diablo. They are projecting to reopen again in a few weeks after clean up.

A few weeks to push some debris down a ramp with a loader. SMH

Study about the Pecos a little, it is nearly always dry by the time it gets to Texas from being used for irrigation. The Texas part of the pecos rebuilds from underground springs. It is just very dry, we need rain badly!

See you on the lake and have a great day!
