I personally have to hold a rod in the store and see what it feels like. I like a light rod for most applications, and typically a fast tip. But for sandbass I use both. Any rod will work, my personal preferences for baitcast & spincast are this.

Baitcast: I use my crankbait rod which is a 7'6" and has a soft blank.. It really loads up well, and is fun to fish with. It is forgiving so you don't pull the hooks out. I use 12lb fluoro just because that's already on the rod. I typically use two jigs so the 12lb is a good balance. I bought this rod because I broke a castaway launcher, and they are very similar. But, and there is a big but in this. I didn't know that it had stainless eyes, and I started to groove them. Castaway wouldn't replace the rod, but they gave me new eyes to put on the rod. DO not buy a rod without carbide, zirconia, etc eyes, or the like. Stainless will not last and eventually you will be casting and pop, your line starts breaking..

Spincast: I like the basspro tourney rods which typically go on sale at christmas for about 25$, normally priced at 50$.. They are a fast action rod, which would be good for light line worm fishing. I get a 6'6"-7" fast action med rod. Have allot of them, and really like them. I strictly use the castking braid from amazon in 8lb & 10lb with a fluoro 15lb to 20lb leader (@ 16-24") long. The leader is what I hold on to when I grab the line. The small braid is not as easy to hold on to.. I tie the fluoro to the braid with a Alberto knot which is bulletproof. This is the knot I use for all my braid to (mono/fluoro) setups. The reason I use the braid is the casting distance on spincast reels. The smaller spool reels really suck when you put fluoro or mono on them. The braid will really reach out far. I can typically cast twice as far with braid vs using mono. The mono coiling affect will slow it down.. If you haven't tried the braid it's exceptionally good, and lasts a long time. I typically put backing on a reel, and then top off the spool with braid. When the line starts to really get beat up at the end, I just flip it on the spool so the worn part is tied to the backing..

The most important thing is wicked sharp hooks, and I sharpen allot. It it isn't dangerous sharp I give it a once over.

Iโ€™ll try not to over complicate anything.

Try the Lews Mach 1 spinning combo. They can be found just about anywhere and are reasonably priced. Like $120 ish. For white bass your going to be using slabs and spinners mostly. This combo has an IM8 blank and is very versatile.

I focus more on the action. If I'm tossing a 1/2-3/4oz jig head with a 4-5" plastic, I use a 7'+ MH-MF or F action. Topwater/dead stick, I prefer a 6'10 MH-F with 20lb braid and a 5' top shot of 20lb mono/flouro respectively. A-rig, I like a long heavy rod.

Live bait- 7' M uglystiks with Garcia's.

If you're just wanting to run cheap rods for artificials, Lighting Rods or Falcon HD's would work fine for Striper applications.
