I know it’s not ideal but does anyone use 10lb mono for deep cranking? Or even 8lb?

My limit is 12 pound for the deep heavy cranks and yes I use mono. The problem with 8lb is if you are using a baitcaster with a deep cankbait there is a good chance when you backlash and your reel stops instantly your bait will break the line and keep going. Seen it more than once.

This is what keeps happening to me with the fc. I don’t have a problem with It but my son and wife use my stuff too and once they backlash the fc a few times It gets a kink and bam, breaks in the reel.

Was thinking mono might help being a little more resilient. 12 will work too. Just thought maybe 10 would be better to still get depth being that mono floats.

12 fc red label is what’s on the reel now.

If I had to use mono it’d be at least 15 big game for deep and super deep cranks that go 20+

I used 10lb big game for years…absolutely no issue. 15lbs completely defeats the purpose of DEEP cranking

Kind of what I was thinking. I feel like 15lb big game would cut my depth in half.

I use 10 pound mono but have run as heavy as 14 pound. Throwing a 20 foot deep diver in 15 feet of water the 14 will usually get you right where you need to be and give you a little more leaverage to get loose from a hang up.

Yep, very castable and cheap enough to change often.

Yep I have run into the kink issue even on spinning reels with fluoro. The fact that fluoro has very little stretch makes any imperfection in the line that much more critical when compared to mono of the same weight.

Like others have suggested, Big Game is a really good tough cranking line and best of all its pretty darn cheap. I have found it almost impossible to break it at times when I get hung so I am always impressed when a fish can break it. LOL

I was having this problem with 10lb fc ( Invisix) so I went back to 12lb mono (Stren low viz green) It is much more forgiving to back lashes. I think it does make a difference on the depth the bait runs, but it is more than frustrating to have the line snap with 30 yards of line out.

I really like Sunline Shooter Defier Armilo. Not quite as stretchy as mono but a little bit more than fluro. I started using it exclusively for big baits and liked it so much, it's my go to for moving baits as well. [Linked Image]

I use 10lb mono for all my cranking... I got in a spot one time and needed some mono and the only stuff I could find was Cajun Red mono. Bought a spool and fell in love with it. It's all I use for cranking, shallow square bill, flat sided balsa to 6XD's... Never had a problem in the last 20 years... I buy it on Amazon in the bulk spools... Dan
