Friends Lenahorse (Larry), etu (Ed), Ed’s friend Bob, Graham M., and Chris M. and I took another three-day, two-night trip to Texoma July 27- 29. Larry’s friend Guy joined us during the day. Most of this group went on a similar trip last November and caught a bunch of Texoma stripers. This time, everything was just as good and fun as November except we didn’t catch nearly the number of stripers as in November. Seven of us caught about 325 stripers back then but only caught about sixty this trip. This trip, we did however, catch 170 big white bass, which salvaged a good trip numbers-wise.

A big issue this trip was the heat. It kept us off the water from about noon to 6 PM, and it had lake water temperatures up to where the fish went deep much of the day, making them hard to find and catch. Another problem was the many tiny shad – an inch long – that fish were feeding on. We caught almost all our stripers this time between 6 and 8 AM and between 8 and 9:15 PM. So, on the 2nd and 3rd days, by 9:30 AM, some of us decided to go fish for white bass. We found them at Big Mineral and caught 60 on day2 and 110 on day3. We caught the stripers on Little Cleos and slabs and caught the whites on Little Cleos, slabs, and Mepps spinners. The good stripers were suspended at 20 to 25 fow in 60 to 80 fow with some small ones breaking the surface above them. The whites were in 3 to 15 fow, and there was a lot of surface schooling. Believe it or not, we caught two of three good box stripers in the 3 fow with the whites around mid-day. Also, Graham caught a 30-inch blue cat, Ed caught about a 5 lb flathead, and I fought a gar up to the boat, and it cut the line and fell off as I tried to lift it into the boat. Didn’t realize it was a gar until I tried to lift it out.

Back at the cabin, Ed, Ed’s friend Bob, and Graham prepared some great meals for us, and we had good fellowship just hanging out. I also introduced 42 (dominos) to Graham, Bob, and Chris. Not sure they were into it, but hope it grows on them. Here is pic of part of this morning’s catch:

It was a great trip to be a part of with good people to be around, sure hope we could do a fall trip when it will be cooler, I love the dead stick type of fishing and usually bigger fish but fewer numbers, good trade off there, plus cooler weather then.
