Great thread! Now I’m wondering if my blood pressure crash was due to the statin I take, Atorvistaten (sp). It crashed back in Oct and ended up in 2 different er rooms. 4 broke ribs in six places. None of my Drs have been able to identify the cause of the bp crash. Thanks
Keep looking forward. That’s why windshields are larger than rear view mirrors.

I have had a prescription for 1 for 7 years, I really didnt want to take it because I dont like taking stuff. Until last year my cholesterol stayed pretty steady between 145 and 160. My good is a touch low. Last year physical it jumped to 208. I decided to take it. Just got my numbers back and I'm back to 148. I have had zero issues with it. Technically I'm supposed to take it at night but that didnt fit my lifestyle and I just couldn't remember to take it before bed. I take it I'm morning. I also take a fish oil.

I took Lipitor when I was 32 years old. I was 6’0, 172, healthy as I was in HS. My cholesterol went down to 170 in a couple of years but my liver enzymes were high. That’s 1 side effect of statins. I’ve been on Zedia the last 25 years or so. Cholesterol runs 150-170 every blood test.

I used to take them, i would take them and then stop and then repeat the cucle. always caused sleep troubles for me. I then started to read how statins are linked to dimentia, so i never went back on them.

I fought the doc on taking them for several years in my early 50's. I started running, exercising, eating right, etc. Was lean and mean, and STILL had a high LDL and total Chloresterol. All factors pointed to being a hereditary thing and sure enough, my mom's side had a history of heart attacks, including my Mom. So I took the docs advice when I was about 54 yrs old. I took Vytorin which is a combo of Ezetimibe/simvastatin. It worked well to keep my numbers low for many years. Then it became crazy expensive. So the Doc moved me to Atorvistatin (Lipitor). It works too, not as well as the Vytorin. I had to increase the dosage. But I am 68 now and don't need any blood pressure or heart meds. Just the Statin. I take it at night before bed, never noticed any unusual muscle aches or pains. I usually eat what I want also, but not outrageous. Right now I could sure stand to lose about 25 lbs. I put some on during this latest Hip Replacement.
Do the Statins work? Yes, they do lower the LDL numbers and triglycerides. Does a high LDL mean your arteries are going to clog up? THe jury is out on that. The problem with the statins is that they run your liver in "hyper drive". So it is imperative that you have your liver checked every 6 months to make sure your Billy Rubins and other liver things are still working ok.
It is all a carp shoot. But I do believe some folks have side effects from the Statins.

I have taken rosuvastatin for several years with no side effects. It has made my numbers come down to normal. Per doctor's advice I take CoQ10 to supplement it. I'm 76. About a year and a half ago my total cholesterol was up to 255. The doc prescribed rosuvastatin. Last tested in April of this year, it was down to 155. I also take CoQ10. The doc said,"whatever you are doing, keep doing it."

I take 40 mg Pravastatin every night before bed. Been doing this since a small heart attack 4 years ago. My number never got over 200, but there is a family history on my father’s side. I also changed what I ate, started exercising regularly and lost 30 lbs. I typically run about 140 these days. Never had any side effects luckily.

Years ago, because of some intended weight loss, my doc took me off the cholesterol meds I had been on for several years. My numbers stayed good until my last physical a few months ago. He put me on rosuvastatin 5 mg, which is the lowest dose. If my numbers are back down in a few months I'm going to quit those and try to maintain with weight control. I've never had any side effects.

If you have gout, be careful. A friend of mine was taking a statin and it caused massive flair ups in his gout. One landed him in the ER.
Try Red Yeast rice pills. All natural and can help to lower your numbers.

I'd drastically alter my diet before I'd take any of those drugs.

Nope... I like my liver nice and healthy... heard too much bad about them... I believe the whole BMI and cholesterol rating thing to be a scam to scare people into conforming to becoming a vegan bean pole and be just as miserable as they are - misery loves company... my cholesterol has been over 200 for decades, I’ve had all the scans and sonagrams, etc. of my cardiovascular system, and everything looks good to the cardiologist with the ol ticker... I’ve seen cardiologists for hereditary high blood pressure for years - thanks mom and gram and gramps... our days are numbered regardless of these “theories and medical folklore... I’m going to eat my Tex-mex, cheese burgers, pizza, fried chicken and eggs lots of eggs... lol...
