2000 Yamaha 225 has a lot of slack in the steering before it will engage . Do I need to refill hydraulic fluid on Seastar steering system or repair? Is refilling common ?

check for leaks, refill and bleed out air and top off. Usually doesn't need done very often. Leaks should be pretty obvious unless line cracked in side of boat which is rare.
