Although I have not fished in many years and far from an expert, in general late july and august are considered the least desirable times of year for carp and buff angling. SIze and numbers tend to be smaller, Buff tend to dislike the heat even more than common carp. The areas you are fishing may produce though and maybe even a pb! I say give it a go and good luck!

I have caught lots of carp and buffalo in July and August. My two recommendations are to fish early and find deep water to fish. Some of the shallow areas I fish seem to be void of fish. I have not been able to get out early the last few weeks and evening fishing has been slow.

Evening into the night has been productive for me in the summer heat. I mainly fished then for my comfort instead of the fish's comfort.

I have caught some nice commons at night. Turtles are my only problem.

I prep for a carp trip, I find a tree or stump in 20' of water or at least in casting distance. Do the location during the day. Throw range cubes out in the 20' water your going to fish about 4 hours before dark thirty.

Come back later and nice and quietly get tied up and ready and then bait up and get the bait in the 20' area. I have used a light in the lake as well as in pitch darkness. I have caught carp like this all summer at PK. Once I tied up to my baited hole still early in the day and in the hot sun, I had carp rolling the surface in 20' foot of water. I took just plain white bread that floats and took just a hook on a 9 wt. Fly rod I carry and I caught carp till I was tired of the Fly rod. The carp in some crowds are referred to as freshwater bonefish. I just know 20 pound carp on my 9 wt Fly rod is quite the sport, my 9 wt is a beast of a Fly rod too.

Might give it a try.

Texas turtles are Tenacious with a capitol T in the summer! On many lakes fishing less than 16' is a turtlefest and deeper water may not be available or within casting disatnce. I always did my best with my cheap rods to try to reach 18-20' and make'em work for a living. Creating jobs for turles was #1 on my august carping agenda!

20lb carp on a fly rod sounds like summer fun! Nice thumb

My few summer holes are 5-10ft at the deepest. No getting away from them. I may return to one of my tailraces where I only compete with small catfish.

I've caught some really big ones lately. No snappers
The biggest had the yellow painted turtle stripes on
the neck, but no orange on the shell. The others were
all around 2 lbs and under with the stripes and the orange.
Suckers are sure well fed on bass and crappie and
little ducks. I'm sure they eat the leftover duck bread too
