Who has tried fresh tilapia? I have had store bought, but fresh caught always taste better on anything. Would you rate it more towards catfish, stripper, large mouth bass. I seem to remember is leaned more to green bass. Which I am not a fan of.

I would relate the taste of tilapia more toward the bottom of the lake. Tried it once and it's just not for me.

Tilapia from the store is usually from China. I understand they feed them out on pig manure. Check out the video below showing Tilapia eating Hippo poop. Tilapia are a very nasty fish. If you want easy to catch tasty healthy fish try for Bluegills and Shellcracker perch.

I caught a mess of talipia from square creek, before they closed down, and it was delicious. One and only time I tried them.
You are right about bluegill and perch Mike. Hard to get a better eating fish than them, they rate right along with crappie.

I haven't bought any store bought fillets and I don't eat it in restaurants..

But fresh caught/bowfished here out of Falcon when properly seasoned and blackened is excellent eating..

More than once the Game Wardens collected nets that are set on the Texas side of the lake.

They'll post on facebook that they're giving away fish at location X and it will damn near start a stampede with the locals..

I like mild tasting fish. Fresh tilapia is one of my favorite freshwater fish to eat. The meat is white and flaky if you remove the dark meat from the fillet. It freezes well and is good both fried and grilled. Nothing beats red snapper, but for freshwater I would take tilapia over catfish anyday. food

I made a few trips with Jackie Kennedy back when Lake Fairfield had tilapia and redfish. The deal was , release all redfish and Jackie would
throw the cast net and get you a mess of Tilapia. Wild caught Tilapia are very good , but I would not eat store bought or restaurant cooked since I watch the
episode of Dirty Jobs that featured the raising of tilapia.

Agree with most here. Wild caught tilapia are good. Better than catfish to me, but not as good as crappie.

Yep! Saw that episode. Striped bass raised in the upper pools and fed commercial fish food. Those tanks drained down into the lower tanks where the lowly tilapia resided. They were fed nothing. They ate the striper poo that drained down into their tanks!

I stock Tilapia in my bass ponds every year... and every year in the fall fill my freezer with fresh caught Tilapia before the cold gets them. Delicious...as good or better than any fresh water fish; .

Only had the store bought, tasted funky. Don't care for it.
