Fished for a couple of hours Sunday morning. Got to dam ramp at 730am and just missed the boat show/topwater bite on the dam. Lots of boats to compete with but I would say there is a decent bite from 630am-730am on dam. From 730am-1030am we chased the roaming schools of fish from the ramp to just north of Perot's place. All of our fish came from 50ft of water burning slabs up through the fish. Fish seemed to be suspended in 20-30ft of water. The bait guys who could keep their shad at the right depth were doing very well. Plenty of guides sticking with just slabs. The biggest problem is most of the fish are overs. We caught several 5lb-7lb fish and I saw boats giving away overs as they had caught their limit too. About 1030 the bite shut down. We went up and down the shoreline and pockets between the dam and Eisenhower looking for box fish but didn't catch any more.

I experienced the same thinking when I went out with a guide there last month. It's catch the limit of overs, then go catch the limit of box fish and go in. I can understand that logic for guides. For us regular fishermen, who do catch and release, our goal is to catch as many overs as we can for the time we have to fish, and the box fish don't go in a box but are simply counters as we tally our results by number and quality of fish caught for our trip out. The more and the bigger the fish caught and released, the more fun and enjoyment. We ARE sensitive to fish survival. If we see that released overs (or box fish for that matter) are struggling to live, we will either keep the ones who die and get the others back into the water more quickly or else go try to find them in shallower water to avoid bringing them up from the deep. So far, in my trips to Texoma, we have not had any problems with released fish dying, but know it can be an issue in this Texas heat.

Might not be a bad idea for us (I mean fishermen in general) to start using deepwater release devices on big stripers in summertime. Dropping them back down into deeper, presumably cooler water would surely increase their survival rate.
