Every now and then, my motor will tilt up, but refuse to tilt down. On the motor, on the throttle, at the wheel...doesn't matter. Pushing the TILT DOWN button is a no go. But...if I bump it further upwards a time or two, then immediately down and it will work. More of an annoyance right now. However, I'm afraid that one day the "bump it up then down" method won't work and it will be stuck in the up position. I have checked all the electronics and circuitry. Hydraulic motor seems good with good fluid. Rods and connections are clean and greased. Battery is charged. All the connections are clean and tight. Relay seems solid. Relay clicks when the TILT DOWN button is pressed. Verified voltage with button press and without. No obvious cause. What might cause such a situation? What is happening such that pressing the TILT DOWN button doesn't work until I bump the TILT UP button? It has to be something in the hydraulic pump, right? I mean, the buttons are activating the relay. The relay is switching the +12V input to the correct hydraulic motor input. So the +12V power is being delivered to the hydraulic motor. It just refuses to lower the motor. Any thoughts?

The relays just change direction of voltage to motor. Bad contacts in relays can allow it to click but not let enough amperage pass through. Other possibility is brushed in motor are worn and its sticking.

Swap the 2 relays and see if the bad position works. Went thru this several years ago on a Merc. BE SURE THE CONTACTS ARE CLEAN WITH NO OIL OR GREASE ON THEM.

If it gets stuck in UP position, it can always be released manually.

This is a Yamaha 225VX OX66. Thus, there is only one relay. It appears clean and the connections appear tight. I can hear the relay click then the UP/DOWN buttons are pressed. I can also see the voltage switching between the UP and DOWN directions when the button is pressed.

The relay in question is $173. I'd prefer to do a bit more troubleshooting before I swap the relay. smile

Just because the relay is clicking and letting voltage through doesn't necessarily mean its good. If theres corrosion on the contacts it will create resistance and not enough volts/amps will pass through.

Try THIS FIRST! Make sure you have fluid in the reservoir & at the proper level before you spend anything! thumb
