I have a Motorguide X3 Digital hand controlled trolling motor. It came with my new boat a few years ago. I like the trolling motor okay but the speed control on the handle has never worked properly. It has always turned the motor on randomly with the speed control handle in the "off" position whether it is working in the water or stowed on the bow. The only way to keep it from coming on randomly is to unplug the motor. It is very annoying and makes it hard to control the motor and boat. I'll be fishing and the motor will suddenly start going forward on its own. Now the motor will go forward when the handle is put all the way in the reverse position. To make it go in reverse I have to set it at a lower reverse speed.

Is the problem likely the switch or control board?
Is it worth trying to fix or replace?
The switch isn't too expensive but a new control board is over $200.
The mounting bracket and the rest of the motor is fine. I'd like to repair it if possible and cost effective.

Boris Marine is nearby but pricey and it takes weeks to repair. They do good work.

I found a similar like new Motorguide trolling motor nearby through Facebook Marketplace that fits my existing bow mount. I’ll use it until I can fix or replace my older motor. The new motor isn’t quite as powerful or have some features but will do fine.
