Leaving next week for a few days at Goose Island State Park(campsite right next to pier, yea!) and then several days at Blue Water RV Resort outside Freeport. This is just down from San Luis Pass and close to Freeport. Moving to fish at San Luis Pass, Freeport Jetties…..is not a really good option. Surf fishing right at the RV park is what I’ll be doing. I know it’s always dependent on Mother Nature as to wind, surf conditions, weather……but what should my approach be to fishing the surf right in this area? Up to date reports? Bait, lures….? TY for any help! Neil.

Right now it's all about the wind, which is bipolar. If you wake up and it's flat, go gettem. Silver spoon, 1/4 head with a paddle tail plastic or topwater in the gut all produces. Surf fish are rarely picky.

Wading boots, long pants, landing net, pliers and a extra long stringer and you're set.

Man that Bluewater is a little pricey. Next time you might look a Brazoria County San Luis Pass Park at the base of the bridge just down the road. I know it is not as nice or new but always serves us well. We will be down from the 8th to the 18th but staying in a house on the canals on bay side. I don't fish the surf often but concentrate on the bays. In Blue Water park you can also take the trail to the other end of the park and fish Cold Pass. The point is shallow but you can wade out a little throw to the west to deep water in the mouth and throw to the other side and hit a 13' cut but boat traffic can be busy. Also can walk the shore line back to the east and cast out to the north in 6-8' water that will have good movement during tide events.
Your middle picture on the opposite end from the red marker is the area I am talking about, and you can also see the deep water in that picture. Great luck and if you see a Gray/Wht Pathfinder TE that is us, holler HEY.

Try the circled red areas if you can get to them and if the surf isn’t fishable.

We rearranged a few days. We are actually leaving this Saturday now. 3 nights(Sat, Sun, Mon) at Goose Island State Park. We will be bayfront right camping in RV right by the pier. Guessing my fishing will be on pier. Then we have 4 nights(Tuesday, Wed, Thurs, Fri) at Blue Water RV close the the San Lois Pass. I will be surf fishing there so hoping for some NON windy days. “Non-windy”? Novel concept these last few months, huh? Hadn’t heard any reports about the Freeport area surf but ready or not we’ll be there. Will try a couple of these circled spots above^^^^^ that are walking distance. Will post what happens when we return.

We're going to Blue Water in a couple of weeks so would be interested in how you do and how you fished.

Just got back from surf fishing over the 4th of July. We were about a mile or two closer to Galveston from where you are staying. Strong south wind every day we were there, water very dirty well past the third gut, and got beat up standing on the first sand bar casting into the second gut. It didn't matter what time of day, it was super rough. We used shrimp to try and catch bait (whiting) but only caught small catfish. Tried several lures (top and bottom) and waves were too bad for those to work. We did see plenty of bigger mullet in the waves so bait is there. Sargassum is around but not bad enough to snag your line a lot. Saw lots of other people fishing but no one catching. Did not bother fishing the bay side but that might be a better option given the wind issues.

I've had my best luck in the surf with topwaters right as it gets light in the morning. Soon as the sun gets up pack it up.

Try the bay side, you will have better luck wade fishing. PM me if you want more info.

How is that salt water /air on your RV?

Same as it is on your car. Not as good as the air elsewhere but not the kiss of death. Millions of RV’s around every coastline. We go at least a couple times a year and I do wash(or at least rinse) my RV off before backing it into the shop when we get back. Guessing someone’s RV that is kept out in the elements 24/7 gets a lot more wear/tear than mine that stays inside year around and just goes on several trips a year? Honestly, I’ve seen no problems associated w/our trips to the coast.

Just have to switch to live bait once the sun comes up a bit.

I can see my house in those pictures. Lol. Wish I was there. It’s the one on the south east little tiny point on the treasure island development. It’s front row….still. For now.

Start in the first gut right next to the shore at dark, then scoot to the 2nd gut if nothing... usually people pass this up and the trout are in here the first several hours... then try the 3rd gut. Keep switching guts and moving until you locate fish; you may have to move alot. This has been successful for us 4-5 times this summer on this exact beach. The water should be greenish, but not super clear. Trout will still be there, but mixed in with sharks, rays, mackerels, ladyfish if too clear.
