My 2021 Christmas present to sister Dee, and I invited Larry to join us. Guide John Blasingame took us out today. We left the dock at 5:50 AM and stopped fishing at 10:40 AM with 101 total: 22 overs up to 29 inches, 73 box fish, and 6 white bass. It started with a bang when John took us up close to the shore, and we saw some boiling water. In less than a minute we all caught an over at the same time. We followed those fish for about an hour and half and had 21 overs when we left to find some box fish. The box fish seemed to be scattered all over the lake in small surfacing schools. A number of egrets and a few herons were working some of the schools. John had us using top-water pencil-poppers most of the time, and they caught most of the fish. John also caught some on heavy slabs dropping them to the bottom and burning them straight up. I managed one that way. Dee and I also caught quite a few on 2/5 oz Little Cleo spoons. Larry also caught several on a 3/4 oz Little Cleo shaped spoon. I caught a few overs and most of my box fish on Little Cleo. We kept all the legal fish we could and then did catch and release after that.
A big thanks to John for treating us to a great time. He was busy as a bee taking all the fish off those pencil-poppers with their multiple treble hooks and netting the overs for us. Also, before leaving the cove on the way out, he stopped to cover safe practices and show Dee and me how to use the pencil-poppers, which neither of us had any experience with.
