Last week I got in the truck to go home after work and no power with tons of deep black smoke. I thought my turbo was out. Got a tow home and then to the shop the next day.
Shop is still diagnosing the issue but they said today, the truck ran just fine. Guy spoke to me about a possible actuator issue rather than the turbo. If so, that will be a good thing because it will be much much cheaper.
As far as the actuator goes, do I need to ask about any kind of upgrade for a part of this kind or stay away from a particular brand, etc.?

By your description is sounds like the bypass valve in your exhaust stuck open which keeps the charger from building boost. You should get a low boost code in any of the modern trucks.
May 4, 2023 Once again, I agree with you.
