Does anyone on here have one? The price of ice has gone crazy and I was telling the wife we should just buy some type of ice machine. I’ve seen some 50 and 100 pound machines that were reasonable and I talked to someone that said they make one that you just pour the water into so you don’t have to run a water line and all that. What’s y’all’s thoughts?

I have owned one for years, in a commercial environment what you wanna know? They are expensive, they break, the quality if ice is determined by the quality of water so you need a good filter system, didi mentionbthey break and service call would equal the annual spend if you bought bagged ice twice a week for a year. You need adequate water pressure at all times or they freeze up. Have I talked you out of one yet

We had a KitchenAid under counter unit and fir 5 years the repair man saw it more than we did. We pulled it and installed a Hoshizaki under counter and it has been flawless for 5 or 6 years. I think it holds 25# and makes around 50# per day.

Buy a freezer, and grab 5 bags at a time every week and you will be way ahead

My 2 hoshi make 1800 lbs a day under optimal conditions. I just replaced them after 11 years last year. About 14k without bin. Obviously that's different than you need. Dont buy one. And if you had hard water you need a softener or scale reducing filter, dont buy one, did I suggest not buying one.

It’s 1.75 for a 16lb bag just two streets over from my house. You can buy a LOT of ice for a $3000 home sized ice machine’s cost.

Twice the Ice is near me and has 22lb bulk or 20lb in bag for 2.50 so I get it there if I need more than my freezers make....

My uncle had the Scotsman ice machine that made the ice like Sonic has. It was great and never had an issue.

GE makes one that doesn't require a water line, I believe. I remember seeing it on Amazon. I think the reviews were pretty mixed on longevity... about $650.

Lived on Padre island for 7 years. On average, I was on the water 3 times a week, on the beach the days I wasn’t in the boat. Always had 2 boats, used many pounds of ice on every trip. Almost never bought ice, unless I was going offshore.

Had a chest freezer. I froze water in cheap plastic bins from wall mart. Used to be 89 cents for a plastic container about the size of a shoe box. I’d keep 3 or 4 dozen frozen at a time. Also had a garage fridge with ice maker. I would bag that ice every 24 hours, about 6 to 8 pounds from that ice maker every day.

I’m a tight azz. Block ice keeps much longer. It was cheap or virtually free.

I wish I could get those prices. Paid a little over $13 for 4 seven pound bags this weekend.
