I haven't fished a lot of Texas lakes, so take this with a grain of salt. I have Helix 9s in my boat and I have the Lakemaster chip in my bow unit. I fish Joe Pool and both the Lakemaster and Humminbird maps of JP are not good at all. They do have the creeks in the right place for the most part, but all of the other structure elements of the lake are pretty much not there. The Navionics online map is much better at showing all of the deep holes that they dug when they built the lake. I"m sure that the maps of the bigger lakes are probably much better, but they didn't do a good job on Joe Pool. Lakemaster don't cover some of the lakes out west by me, Navionics has much better coverage and the photo overlays are the ticket.

Avoid Solix/Apex units, bad track support, glitches, slow response.
Determine what mapping best covers the lakes you fish, then weight that in selecting which units.
Helix units are ok, but non-touch screen, waypoint names clutter screen, waypoints hard to edit on unit. Supported by HumminbirdPC.
Lowrance HDS units are better, touch screens, waypoints can be set icon-only, waypoints easier to select & edit on unit. Great support by Reefmaster Waypoint Manager. Easier waypoint & track management.
I have 2 Helix units and I don't have waypoint names showing on my map screens. Maybe that's a setting that you have turned on? Sounds like you are just a fan of touch-screen anyway.

I have Navionics and Lakemaster on Solix units. Navionics seems to have more lakes/rivers covered. Accuracy varies from lake to lake between the cards; I just check both at a new lake until I figure out which is better. Water level adjustment and depth highlight on Lakemaster is very cool and handy.

“Best mapping”, “ best graph”, “ best sonar”…..? You’re gonna get 1000 answers…….OK, maybe 3 answers!

I don’t think any brand is a leader. They all make you buy extra cards. It seems to me like it’s lake dependent as far as which units map is best. Also on the same lake they don’t always show you the same stuff. It’s annoying

I've just got an old Humminbird 1197 that does my mapping, at first I wasn't to obsevant of what it was showing me and ran my rig aground literally several hundred yards in a shallow flat on Cooper Lake, boy that was an adventure. That tought me to really pay attention to the map. I run full screen map when I'm running the big motor. A corrected water level system would really help out a lot. I didn't know Garmin wont accept mapping cards or their mapping software left a lot to be desired. Upgrades are coming one way or the other to my rig because it has 10 year old electronics on it. All new stuff that will except mapping cards or a new boat all together.

Currently have a garmin 7616 but thinking of swapping to 2 12’s or an hds 16 or Solix15/apex 16. Just trying to see what most people are liking as far as mapping. I’m not too fond of the garmin as far as not accepting navionics I'd run a card no matter what unit I was running, I run a Lakemaster in my bird and Naviionics in my Lowrance units. I've never understood why Garmin (the company that has one of the longest and best reputations in mapping and GPS) has such crappy mapping and maps on their Sonar units. I've ran Lowrance, HB, and Garmin. I by far prefer Garmin out of all of them. It's just personal preference

Lowrance mapping seems more user friendly to me however I will say that C-MAP will get you hurt on Lake Palestine.

I didn’t care for the Garmin mapping at all until the Vision+ came out. I love it now.
