Actually I did this (on purpose). Except for a very few years I've run a 1994 BW 13 Dauntless as a: tender for a trawler; skinny water charter boat; and now as our "big" & only boat for all uses. The general breakdown of engines I've had over the years (on 2 of them): 30 (underpowered) does 22, 40hp does 45, 50 & over does insane (in such a short boat).

When the last 40 became a maystart, why go to 30 (actually the 20 hp Mercury series of engines)? 30 got away from battery start. Still have a starter - but this series has a magneto and a pull rope so there's an option I don't have on larger. Back issues: I crashed a plane, my spine now makes an arrow point towards my belly button - so jumping waves just isn't what I do anymore - I'm more interested in smoothness on the slow end for trolling than anything else. Draft: the boat floats level with the lighter engine.

So there are reasons other than above, but the ones above are valid for some too - especially the wife and cost issues . . .

not the type of boat I was referring to, more of the 20-21 foot bass boats that are under powered

Maybe they are just very conservative or bought a boat that fit their budget. I guess if you like the boat for the type of fishing you do, the smaller outboard would be fine if you are happy. I owned a 20 ft Skeeter many years ago and it was underpowered with a 150 hp engine. I bought it used and the seller took me for a test run and it did ok. Loved the huge decks and storage enough to not allow the smaller engine to be a deal breaker. So I bought it until I upgraded a few years later.

Almost every boat I have had over the last 30 years have been overpowered, but I see a lot of underpowered ones out there. Except for resale, I don’t really see much too negative about underpowered boats. A 20’ boat with a 150hp reaching 85 mph has more to do with the hull than the motor. 150 might be a good choice for cost and mpg.

I saw a 20 ft Champ with a 150 on it this last week. I'm sure there was a story.

Is this like owning a full-sized truck with a 4-cyl. or V6 motor?

I owned the Ford F150 with the 2.7 V6 and of course my Dodge 2500 with the little 5.9 I6.
Do those count?

I kind of figured. I'm guilty at both ends of the spectrum though:

When I ordered my Ranger in 1985 I looked at a 395V. At that time Merc did not make a motor to match the HP rating so I opted for a 375. I really wanted the bigger boat but I believe in putting the max HP on them. When I started looking for a bay boat 5 years ago I noticed that most of them did not have the max HP. I found one Skeeter that did but it sold quick. When I bought the Champ I asked the guy why he did not put a 250 on it. He said "well I could have". I was thinking what a stupid answer. If I have to replace the motor or powerhead it will definitely get a 250. I had a buddy tell me once if you don't max out the HP you will always be wondering why.
