Mathematically.....

A person's vehicle is down to needing about 9 gallons of gas, they drive 20 miles to their favorite gas station, wait in the longer line than usual gas burning more gas. By the time they are at the pump they now need 10 gallons of gas. They save $1.80 by having the gas tax holiday, but spent an hour of their life (let's use the new $15 an hour talking point), and burned an extra gallon of fuel ($5 national average from the other day). That means that going to the pump to save themselves a few cents actually cost them $18.20.


I grew up where my dad would drive 30 miles to get gas 1 to 2 cents cheaper. He said it was the principle of the matter. I told him it was wasting money to make a point that no one would see or pay attention to.

I agree on the penny and 30 miles. I have driven miles farther to get gas cheaper for the same reason as your father but your example is an extreme that I would avoid.

Joe's mentor and former boss, BHO, called this idea a "gimmick" in 2008. This is doing something for the sake of being able to say they did something.
