Dad and I did not get along very well after I got out of the Army and before I left home. A few years later we began to click but I was too busy to spend much time together. He died of cancer a couple of years later and I have missed him ever since. That was 42 years ago.

Never give up your guns. Never wear anything that you can’t just hop in the woods with. Shortly thereafter he was finally arrested and lost his right to firearm’s. The clothes thing was because the police couldn’t catch him in the bottoms.

I try to instill the importance of a daily walk with Jesus and a life balanced life where we don’t chase our careers and the dollar at the cost of family time.

Well, my dad just messaged me to say that the VA oncology department has stopped his cancer treatments because he's too far gone. He's been dealing with this for a few years now, so he's outlived the initial prognosis of 4-6 months. They told him to get his affairs in order and he's getting hospice care lined up with them.
Haven't really had much of a relationship with him for my adult life, so I'm not sure how I should be feeling. It's just weird right now.
Anyways, best advice he gave me as a kid was "don't point that damn gun at anybody", "always double check your knots", and my favorite - "all women are crazy".

Pack up and leave when your son is 3 years old and see him 5 times in the next 25 years before and die of a heart attack at age 47. That’s about the all the advice I ever got from my “father”. Guess it wasn’t advice but it’s what he did.

At 12 the old man said "never mess with a man that has nothing to lose. He will be the one that kills you."

I don't recall anything specific from my dad, but his work ethic definitely stuck with me. He worked all the time. He did whatever he had to keep us comfortable and with the best roof over our heads he could provide. When I was born we lived in a trailer, when I graduate high school they had a nice 2000-square-foot house on 5 acres. He worked in a factory most of my childhood, he was a volunteer firefighter and EMT, and mowed cemeteries in the evenings for extra money. Somehow he still managed to make it to most of the little league games and never missed a Sunday morning church service. Mom made sure us kids didn't miss Sunday or Wednesday night either!
The main thing I try an instill in my daughters is grit. Perseverance and a don't give up attitude.

My Dad taught me how to hunt/fish/and take care of my guns. My Uncle taught me my work ethic. My Uncle also taught me that if I acted up, he would kick the crack out of my arse. What I taught my girls was to be a leader, not a follower. Never just go along with the crowd. If you find yourself in a situation that feels wrong, don't do it. I promise there will be at least one other person that will follow your lead but were to scared to act first.

From my dad: Playing baseball, if I got hit in the face or let a ball get past me - "Son, that cow died for a reason, next time you ought to use it..."
To my son: You aren't entitled to anything. Things are taken away from you as easily as they came. If something comes easily, it will be taken just as easily. If you work for it like your life depends on it, no one will be able to pry it away from you.

Don't throw the first swing, but if you have to, make sure they live to remember to never try that again.

My father told me: "Don't try to impress or please the entire world. If you can look in the mirror and see an honorable man looking back at you then you are doing ok."
He also told me to always take a few minutes to watch a sunrise or sunset, see a bird fly, look at a flower, and to enjoy the little things you see during the day because someday it will be the last time you can do it. I lost him to lung cancer on Sept 29, 2013.
