In the spirit of fathers day, what's the best advice you ever got from your father? And... dads, what's the one thing you work hardest at trying to instill in your children?

This will be my first father's day without my dad, so I'm trying not to think about this weekend too much.
Best advice he ever gave me was when I was working my butt off in college trying to get more playing time on the baseball team but there was 60-something guys on the roster because it was D3 and coach didn't have scholarships to limit the team size with. Dad asked me over Christmas break if I thought baseball was my career and of course it wasn't, so we talked and I quit, which meant I got to focus on engineering and had enough spare time to go play golf with him 4-5 days a week. Those were the best years of my life - I had a bunch of great college friends, met/dated/got engaged to my wife, played golf with dad all the time, and had little to no responsibility other than a crazy easy job and keeping my grades up. Wouldn't have been that level of enjoyable if dad hadn't said something to me about letting baseball go.
I try to teach my kids not to let a situation/circumstance control their attitude and reaction. They've heard me say a thousand times that life is 10% what happens and 90% what you make of it. Being cool under pressure and having the grit to choose the right path instead of the easy one are probably the most valuable assets I had in my baseball and engineering careers.
Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards. - Soren Kierkegaard

From Dad: ALWAYS get in the first punch, right to the nose , then keep it up like a buzz saw .
To my Kiddos: Don't sell this dirt, if you do you will have to find a way to invest that money. What investment is better than the one you have already.

Pour the Dr Pepper first, then add the ice cream. And the term ice cream he implied Blue Bell Natural Vanilla Bean.

Take the old part with you when you go to the auto store. Anytime he worked on our cars he made me help. Best thing he could have ever taught me.

Work ethic. He didn't have it & I try like hell to make sure my girls know that good things come from working for it.

So many things, but they were examples, not advice. A D-Day survivor, a farmer and cattleman for 40 years, and a great fisherman and hunter. I can’t really come up with one piece of advice he gave me, but I can think of many examples in his life that I try to live in my own life.

My Dad told me several times while growing up. " You have to work to make a living". Very simple. I have two grown up boys, and I have told them . #1. To trust/accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their savior and follow him the best you can. #2. Be honest. #3. Hard work pays off. I also tell them to keep life simple and not to be your own worst enemy. Life is good despite the hardships we face.

Really too much to list, but some of my favorites:
Don't be afraid to get in a bind, the learning happens when you figure out how to get out of that bind.
About People: Your gut is rarely wrong and little children and dogs have the best sense of someone. If they don't trust them, neither should you.

Pour the Dr Pepper first, then add the ice cream. And the term ice cream he implied Blue Bell Natural Vanilla Bean. I get it. I’ve recently been doing the opposite. Can’t wait to try it tonight.
