Keep a running list of how much money you're saving. When it gets up there, go buy something you've always wanted but thought was too expensive.

It is a tough decision, and you will likely need to change some relationships as well. There will be losses and gains.
A couple of things for starters Define your triggers. You may or may not have to completely avoid them. You do need to know what they are. Make a list of what makes you want a drink. Good and bad times, make the list. Be done with the "just 1 drink" thought. Don’t have the 1st drink, and take this attitude day by day. Once you start stacking days, it get manageable. It has to get manageable before it gets easier.
Sept of 2012 and counting.

I worked outside a lot this weekend. Doing things for our new camper. It was hot, the thought of cold beer sure sounded good. But I stuck with gatoraid and water. Felt good afterwards. I liked that feeling. I'm going to keep it up.

I sure thought about it last night. I had too much going one. Had the grand kids, step father called needing help with his computer, canned seven jars of peach salsa and five jars of regular salsa. I didn't get one, but sure thought about it. I think this is day six now.

Been just over 7 years now. It was really rough at first, my whole life seemed to revolve around alcohol now that I look back. I can't stop at 1 or 2 but I CAN stop at 0. I did have to quit going certain places and hanging out with certain friends. Some places are just too much of a trigger and some friends are just not as much fun if you are sober and they will try to get you to drink.
