For those of you using Livescope for crappie, do you prefer to have the transducer mounted to your trolling motor or separate? Why?

My boat is a fish/ski and has a trolling motor. My primary use will be shooting for crappie under docks and on brush. Secondary use might be fishing for whites on structure.

Thank you for your help!

Since I crappie fish 90% of the time, I prefer a pole mount for my livescope. I have the Seelite 2.0 pole with the fish obsessed perspective mount. I am extremely pleased with both.
I fish brush piles, bridges, docks and standing timber.

Do you have a trolling motor with spot lock?

I fish for crappie the majority of the time. I have my Mega Live transducer mounted on a Poleducer from Shut Up and Fish. I have an trolling motor with spot lock. When fishing when the wind blows (most of the time here in South Texas) it's easier to keep the transducer positioned to see timber or brush piles.

This is the 2nd Poleducer I've purchased and they have worked great.

I fish standing timber, brush piles and bridges.

Either mount position will work, it's what you get used to using. If you fish alone, on the TM might be good. If you have other people in the boat more often than alone, then a separate mount might be the best. With a separate mount, you can position the structure to the side of the boat so others can reach the fish. If you have a wide bow and two people can fish up front, then the TM works well. If mounted on the TM, approaching the structure from direct down wind is the best to maintain the structure in the transducer cone. Trying to hold a boat to the side of structure with transducer on the TM will be beyond frustrating.
I use a separate transducer mount from All Aboard Marine that attaches to my Ultrex. Best of both worlds for me. I can hold into the wind with spot lock and keep the structure on the screen at the side of the boat if necessary. You will find that having longer rods, 10ft+, will help dropping on the fish without having to get on top of the structure.
Good fish

IMO, It really depends on how you fish as to what is better for you. If you plan to fish docks and brushpiles mostly, I would lean towards the pole mounted separately. When you have the ducer on the TM and you spot lock over brush, you are not going to see the brush enough to fish it effectively IMO. Having it on a pole, you can spotlock and let the TM do what it needs to and use the pole to keep sight on the pile at all times. Same goes for docks. I have had mine on a pole for the whole time I have had it and I really only want it on the TM when timber fishing which I do not do much of.

I have a pole mount ( fishing specialties) , If the livescope was mounted on the TM , I think it would not be pointed in the right direction 90% of the time.

I fish from the right side of the boat , about 6 ft behind the TM. I like to position the boat so that the brushpile is to the right and forward of
my seat. My screen is directly in front of my seat , I like to adjust the pole so that I am always seeing my bait.

your mileage may vary

I've had all 3 options. Direct on TM, Separate Pole, and Hybrid option (All Aboard on TM but can operate independent of TM). I like the Hybrid option to give me the most flexibility. For a beginner with LS, i suggest a separate pole). mount the pole on the side of your non-dominant rod hand. that will give you the best chance for success in multi-tasking. hold the rod with one hand while your other hand works the pole-ducer.

I have used LS for several years and I fish a lot of crappie tournaments. Most of us that are die hard tournament crappie guys put the transducer on the TM. That's because we are targeting individual BIG fish. We don't care about loading the boat with a limit of keepers. Not that we can't do that, but it's just different. I had a partner that put his on a pole, so I have fished it both ways. My advice... For the type of fishing you describe, I would get an Ultrex or other gps controlled TM and put the LS on a pole. I think you'll find the learning curve easier with that setup. Mounting it on the TM requires some top notch boat control. If you decide you want to step it up to another level, you can always put it on the TM later.

I've tried both and I prefer the separate pole mount. Both have their pros and cons. With the TM mount it's much easier to cruise and locate lone fish to snipe. But the pole mount works better for me when I fish structure using spot lock. Since that's what I do mostly I have it on a pole mount.

I went straight to pole mount, but crafted my own with higher strength setup so that I can cruise with it. If you craft your own I definitely recommend a collar to tighten the pole to allow for hands free to be able to point at structure and it holds position. As others have mentioned it works well to hold the boat to the side of structure and allow a group to fish the same area. I think it works well for timber and targeting as well considering I can quickly scan around while on the move or approaching trees. Having the separate pole also allows for strafing structure as I pass by to see if there is something showing up from a different angle. I would get frustrated with rotating the trolling motor to the side and strafing versus maintaining course while I strafe with LS.

Another point that I don't know for sure is valid or not for everyone, but I felt there could be a higher degree of risk to the transducer cable when mounted to the trolling motor. I feel I have less control of where the cable bends and lands in the boat when deploying and retrieving the trolling motor versus a separate lightweight pole to the side. This comes from years of running the old 2d transducers on the trolling motor. I also believe I rotate the transducer cable less on a separate pole.

Pole mount separate from the trolling motor ! Now I would like to get the pole of my fishing deck later on and add the motorized hands free gadget as it mounts on the troller shaft but u can control it so when spot lock is doing it’s little dance I can still target my BP or timber etc.
