Caught this limit Saturday on some small perch. It only took about 30 minutes to limit out. This includes the time to launch the boat and get to my spot. I never got all poles in the water. When I got the second pole down it immediately had a striper on it. By the time I got that one in the net the other pole had one on. I had fished this spot the day before with a couple of Nephews in the 8-10 range. They got a couple but really struggled to bring them in. The 8 year hold would grab the pole with both hands and was able to pull the pole ( which was bending double) out of the water, he just needed a 3rd hand to reel the fish in. be interested in hearing how the guides handle this, as I often get youngsters coming out to PK and they want to fish. Once these stripers are hooked they are looking to spool the reel if they can. I normally use shiners for these kids and let them catch the big bluegills and sandies but with the large number of striper that bite if really off. Anything like that which these striped bass can get in their mouth has to go hide when they come around or they will not be alive long. Sorry for the bad pic. I need to break down and buy a cleaning table. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2022/06/full-75490-141829-6_5_22.jpg)

Any signs of a shad spawn or early topwater action with the stripers?
Will be down this weekend and early next week and would love to let the kids catch a few.

I have not found any shad schools that I could catch with a throw net. I've looked hard and have given up and moved on to perch. The stripers are taking perch very readily right now. When there are shad, they don't hit them as quick as they are doing now. One of the fish I caught took the perch as soon as I stopped lowering it down. I put it down 36 feet over fish swimming in the 45 foot range. The minute I stopped and clicked the bail the drag was steaming line out.
If you cannot get perch, you could try big shiners. I caught one or two stripers every day I crappie fished this spring with crappie minnows. The places I was catching crappie now have stripers and the crappie are gone.
If you decide to use perch don't keep them over 4 inches. You can still catch an occasional striper on a bigger perch but the bites are fast on the 2-4 inch guys. If you have a throw net look for the big clouds of fry in the shallows. If you throw your net into that most of the time you'll get a net full of small perch that are eating the fry. Last time it was one throw and I had bait.
